William Knight was the last archdeacon of Rich- mond while it was part of the diocese of York. He resigned it to king Henry VIII, and was made bishop of Bath and Wells. John Birde, the first bishop of Chester, also obtained the archidiaconal power of Richmond, in like manner as he had done of Chester. After his deprivation, his successor, bishop Cotes, appointed to this dignity John Hanson. He was deprived in 1559. Christopher Goodman was instituted in 1539. He died 4th June 1603. Thomas Malloby, collated 6th Nov. 1603; he resigned on being made dean of Chester in 1607. Thomas Don, collated ist Dec. 1607, on the resigna- tion of Mallory. He died 10th March 1647-8. Henry I^udgeman, collated 20th May 1648; he re- signed it on being made dean of Chester in j66o. Charles Brid(;eman, collated loth Juno 1664. He died 26th Nov. 1678. Henry Dovk, 3rd Dec. 1678.
