plain much dissected and covered with well rounded granitic boulders and gravel. Pinon pinyon pine and cedars Juniperus cover the mesa. Started at 6:45 a.m. in 2 seated carriage with driver, Hewett, Robbins, Nusbaum, Jane Abbott and myself. Reached Buckman Buckman, NM at 11:15. As we drove down a gulch toward Buckman Buckman, NM on the left were horizontal sandstones capped by columnar basalt. Just before reaching Buckman Buckman, NM there is apparently a neck from which the basalt flowed. A gulch has cut it in two. Crossed the Rio Grande Rio Grande River at Buckman Buckman, NM and began the climb out of canyon. N of Buckman Buckman, NM tufa covers a basalt, but is said to be burned at bottom by basalt showing that it is older than the basalt. It is reddish and yellowish. We reached camp in the Rito de los Frijoles Rito de los Frijoles at 5 p.m., the team stopping on the rim of the canyon, whence we carried our baggage down the trail to camp. Chose 4 rooms in the old cliff ruins for our quarters and had the Indians carry our outfit up. Canyon wren Catherpes mexicanus singing over our heads. On trip saw night hawks Chordeilinae, pinon jays Gymnorhinus cyanocephalus, mourning doves Zenaida macroura, hummers hummingbird etc. Also 2 cotton tails Sylvilagus with brown or red spots just back of shoulder or on shoulder, and several () (spermophiles) (?)
