replied : ' O Sultan, we will contrive something to remove the smell.' Then he brought a pipe, and went to the soldiers who came by night to the Sultan's palace, (telling them) that when they hear the watchman overhead they must assemble (in the Sultan's room). During the night the Sultan was asleep and his wife said : ' A smell rises from me ! ' Then the soldiers thronged together (to the Sultan) and the Sultan said: 'What's the matter?' The soldiers answered that Abu-Nowas had been the cause of it. In the morning the Sultan said to the vizier : ' I never want to see Abu-Nowas again.' The vizier replied : ' If you don't want to see Abu- Nowas, we will throw him into the well where the ape will eat him.' When Abu-Nowas comes in the morning the vizier said to him : ' The Sultan will throw you into the well to-day!' Abu-Nowas answered that he would come after two or three hours. Then he went

'Amileto arba' dik ushwoy- yet esh, umisik et-tablkh wul-esh werah ila 's-seraya. Awwal ma shafu el- bawwab, makanshi kallimmo haga 'alashan kan khayif : er-ragil yehosh min awwal bab lamma '1-akher. Er-ragil la'a es-sultan wul-wezir wel-ulad 'a'idin ; rama es-salam. Es-sultan kallimmo: " Mak e, ya shekh?" 'Alio: 'Andi hediya 'alashanak." 'Alio: " fi el-hediya?" 'Alio: " Akl." 'Alio: "Tay- yib ; ana lissa kaman makalnash." Hat el -akl wastihum, u'a'dum yaklu. Es- sultan 'al ler-ragil: "farrag!" Er-ragil edda I'kul wahid wahid dik. Es- sultan 'alio : "ya shekh, enta 'alashane mafish?" 'Alio: " el-a'il yakul min em-mara'a." El-wezir kallim lis-sultan : " Er-ragilda magnun ; yi'milna maganin u huwa a'il." Es-sultan gi za'alan min er-ragil ukallim : "lazim yidrobu tajyib." Uba'den darabu er-ragil we-shaliih min es-seraya.
