down into Virginia, in November, 162, the 11th corps advanced to and from that Place Capt Dahlgren, with Gen. Sigel's bodygard, made the attack upon Fredericksburg, which has now become history Gen. Burnside expressed his thanks for the valuable information furnished, Returning with the corps to Fairfax Court-house, he was sent for by Gen. Burnside, prior to the assault upon Fredericksburg, and detailed Special Aide upon that General's Staff. At the crossing of the Rappahannock he was the only one of Gen. Burnside's Aide we were in the boats and was one of the first to land.
When Gen, Hooker took command Capt. Dahlgreen was transferred to his staff, and distinguished himself at Chancellorsville and in the cavalry fights at Aldie and its vicinity, Learning that a bearer of dispatches to Gen. Lee was en route for that General, he scoured the country between the columns of the rebel army until he anticipated the arrival at Greencastle, where he attacked and captured the whole party, including the dispatches.
To find his way to Gen. Meade's headquarters was no easy task, but by adopting every possible resouce, dividing his men into small parties, and riding him- self with only an orderly, he succeeded in reaching headquarters after the first day's fighting, where the council of war was being held which was to decide the fate of the army. Covered with sust fron his long ride, he walked to the General's tent and placed before the council the dispatches of Jefferson Davis to Gen Lee, the most important capture which could possibly have been made.
Returning with his 100 men, be assisted materially in worrying the enemy, by destroying wagon trains and attacking them at every point.
On the retreat of the rebels, he was in the famous charge into Hagerstown, where, of five officers who led, two were killed, but was wounded and one was saved by his scabbard Capt. Dahlgren was then brought to Washington, where amputation was performed. Owing to that severe inflamation which had art in the operation was very critical one, and it was not until five operations had been performed that the wound would heal, His life was despaired of at the time, but his indomitable will brought him safely through the trial.
