It is often said that there are no rules without exceptions; and in the works of all the great masters we occasionally find fugue answers which cannot be explained on any of the principles laid down in this chapter. As our last illustrations, we give one specimen by each of the greatest composers, of an irregular fugue answer. If the student has mastered the contents of this chapter, no notes will be needed; he will see at once wherein the irregularity consists.
