But the Syrians profession of Christianity to me was I thought a little too insistent to be wholesome. Again the adaptability of our men. Let it be remembered that our training had not been for infantry. Many had not seen a bomb thrown before & trench-warfare was new to us. Yet the unhesitating alacrity with which the men threw themselves into the new job was such as an outsider or Turk would not be able to distinguish between them & the neighbourhood infantrymen – and I say again that the 4th Brigade were a high standard to match.
