in which the seasons return, but the order of seasons is not the physical cause of the acts of the larmer. The two orders of succession, though correlated, are totally different. In the one case, a material law is the bond of union between the successive steps; in the other, volition effects the synthesis. The like relation subsists between the secondary laws by which successive stages of adaptation are produced, and the order by which successive forms of life are introduced. All research has failed to detect any physical cause, by which the one order is only the result of the other. Both orders flow from the same Divine source, but the lines of causation are totally distinct.
