ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

With regard to my share in the writing of this little book I should like to express my thanks to several friends who have given me valuable counsel and other generous help; in particular, among others, to Dr. J. N. Farquhar, now Professor of Comparative Religion in the University of Manchester, who first asked us to undertake the work; to Dr. N. Macnicol, of Poona, who put his wide knowledge freely at my disposal, and who has spared time to read the proofs; to Mr. K. T. Paul, for many suggestions and for his constant interest and encouragement; and to my friend, Mr. K. Natarajan, Editor of the Indian Social Reformer.

February, 1924.

In reprinting this book opportunity has been taken to give references for quotations from Mr. Gāndhi’s writings and speeches, and to add a short bibliography of books bearing on his life and work. The time has not yet come for attempting a valuation of Mr. Gāndhi’s activities since his release from prison, but a brief account of the Unity Conference, held at Delhi in Sept.-Oct., 1924, has been added as an appendix.
