IV PREFACE sical dictionaries. Mere transliterations of Greek epi- thets, and the like, are, of course, not Latinized; but where a Latin form exists it has usually been preferred. While perfect consistency in form is unattainable on these principles, it is believed that such consistency is less desirable than the advantages otherwise gained. As a guide to proper pronunciation, the quantities of all the long vowels have been marked in the index, and, in the text, in names printed in italic or full-faced type.
