Sambhu Chandra Mookerjee

1839-1894

Sambhu Chandra Mookerjee who, in a way discovered and appreciated the poetic zeal in Gurajada at an early stage, was one of the forefront editors in the country during later half of the nineteenth century. In 1855, while still in college, Mukharjee took to journalism and became a co-founder of Calcutta Monthly Magazine. After its early closure, he pursued the profession ofjournalism and joined the Morning Chronicle as its EditoL Subsequently, he switched over to the Hindu Patriot in 1859 as an Assistant Editor. The journal was ably edited and published by Harish Chandra Mukharjee, brought Sambhu Chandra to limelight as a talented commentator of national and international affairs, as a literary critic of outstanding merit and as one who could rival Englishmen themselves in his mastery over English. He started Mukharjee s Magazine in 1872 which played a prominent role in awakening economic and political nationalism. Subsequently he merged Mukharjee ‘s Magazine with his newly launched weekly Reis and Rayyet in 1882 and continued it till his death on 7th Feb., 1894.
