Government Notification.

The Contract for publishing this Gazette, entered into on the 24th September, 1853, was terminated on the 30th ultime; and notice is hereby given, that a New Series of this Gazette will be published hereafter, to commence from the 7th instant, under a New Contract, and that

"THE HONGKONG GOVERNMENT GAZETTE,"

will, as before, be the only Official Organ for Proclamations, Notifications, and Public Papers, of this Government.

Diplomatic Department.

His Excellency Her Majesty's Plenipotentiary and Superintendent of British Trade in China is pleased to notify, (illegible text) The Right Honorable The Earl of Clarendon, K.G., (illegible text) appointed Frederick Harvey, Esq., late Secretary and Registrar to Her Majesty's Plenipotentiary and the Superintendency of British Trade in China, to be Her Majesty's Vice-Consul at Shanghae.

His Excellency Her Majesty's Plenipotentiary and Superintendent of British Trade in China, is pleased to notify the appointment of Thomas Francis Wade, Esq., (illegible text) the pleasure of Her Majesty's Government, to the (illegible text) Secretaryship in this Superintendency.

His Excellency the Chief Superintendent of Trade (illegible text) received copy of a Proclamation issued by His Excellency Wang, the Governor General of Fuh-keen and Che-keang, stating it has come to his knowledge that Female (illegible text) have been bought at Ningpo for the purpose of (illegible text) shipped to Foreign Countries, and that it is his (illegible text) rigorously to prohibit the practice. And His Excellency the Viceroy farther desires the co-operation of the representatives of Foreign Nations to put an end to a (illegible text) so degrading and inhuman. The Viceroy announces (illegible text) will punish those who disobey his Proclamation (illegible text) the utmost rigor of the Law. His Excellency the Chief Superintendent of Trade hereby gives notice, that parties who shall engage in Illegal Traffic of pur(illegible text) Chinese Females, expose themselves to the penalty provided under the Anti-Slavery Act; and Orders will be given to Her Majesty's Authorities in China to enforce those penalties against the Subjects of Her Majesty.

Government Notification.

In consequence of Instructions from Her Majesty's Principal Secretary of State for the Colonies having reference to the Government of Hongkong and its Dependencies, it is hereby intimated, that the Government Notification of 15th April, 1854, first in order in the Gazette of 22d April, 1854, is withdrawn from this date, and that all Communications to Government in matters concerning this Colony are in future to be addressed to the Colonial Secretary, for submission to His Excellency the Governor and Commander-in-Chief.

Government Notification.

The Reverend John James Irwin, having this day reported his arrival in the Colony, is appointed Colonial Chaplain of Hongkong, by virtue of a Warrant under the Royal Sign Manual; and assumed accordingly the duties of his Office from this date.
