This will bring into action all the muscles of the arm; but, in order to give the whole arm and shoulder full play, other exercises are requi­site, especially those which appeal to the muscles of the back and lower extremities; for, as a general rule, it is not well to appeal to an isolated set of muscles only. In this case the rowing motion is desirable. (See Fig. 3.)

The sawing exercise is performed with the same handles as the row­ing, the pupil only taking another position. The alternate pressure which this exercise causes upon the cartilages which separate the bones of the spine promotes its elasticity, and enables it to maintain the upright and natural position. (See Fig. 4.)
