to the processes of the manufacture. In 188081 he was elected a member of the Massachusetts state senate; and in 1882 was lieutenant-governor of the state. In 1887-90 he was governor of Massachusetts. He died Oct. 32, 1895, in North Easton, Mass.

Springfield, Mass. He received his education in the public schools and academies of his native state; and graduated from the Jefferson medical college of Philadelphia, Pa. He was resident surgeon of the Jefferson and Philadelphia hospitals; in 1881-90 was surgeon in the United States marine hospital service; and now practices his profession in Springfield, Mass. In 1904-05 he was a representative in the Massachusetts state legislature. He is a member of the American medical association ; a member of the Massachusetts medical association; and a member of the Hampden medical association.

was born April 19, 1805, in Dedham, Mass. He was the sixth of the seven children of Hon. Fisher Ames. He was sent as a author,

representative from Lowell to the general court in 1832; and in 1841 was elected state senator from Middlesex county. He served as city alderman in 1836-37 and in 1840; and was city solicitor in 1842-49. He became judge of the superior court in 1859; became chief justice of the court in 1867; and was judge of the supreme judicial court in 186981. In 1854 he published an enlarged edition, in two volumes, of the works of his father, Fisher Ames. He died Aug. 15, 1881, in Brookline, Mass. Ames, Samuel, lawyer, jurist, author, was born Sept. 6, 1806, in Providence, R.I. He served in the Providence city council; was for many years a member of the Rhode Island state assembly; and was elected speaker of that body in 1844 and 1845. In 1853 he was appointed by the state legislature to represent the state in adjusting the boundary between Rhode Island and Massachusetts. In 1855-57 he was one of the commissioners to revise the statutes of Rhode Island. He was chief justice of the state supreme court in 1856-65. He was a delegate to the peace convention in 1861. The law books of which he was author or editor are Agnell and Ames on Corporations; and Rhode Island Reports, volumes four to seven. He died Dec. 30, 1865, in Providence, R.I.

Oliver Ames continued the business, and established the great reputation of the firm. He served three terms as a representative in the Massachusetts state legislature; and was one year a member of the state senate. He died Sept. 11, 1863, in North Easton, Mass.

Ames, Oliver, manufacturer, was state senator, railroad president, was bom Nov. 5, 1807, in Plymouth, Mass. He was a member of the Massachusetts state senate in 1852-57. He was largely interested with his brother in the development of the Union pacific railroad; and was its president in 1868-71. He was connected with the credit mobilier; and in 1873 succeeded his brother as the head of the firm. He died March 9, 1877, in North Easton, Mass.
