In 1898 he was made brigadier-general of volunteers. He commanded the first expedition to the Philippines; commanded the land forces which took Manila; was made major-general of volunteers Aug. 13, 1898; brigadier general United States army March 30, 1899 and retired Jan. 21, 1900. He later became commandant of the soldiers' home in Ohio. He has been vice-president of the sons of the American revolution; past commander of the loyal legion; besides holding various other positions of honor. He was a local preacher in the Wesleyan methodist church in England; and subsequently attended the Drew theological seminary of Madison, N.J. He is now one of the foremost clergymen of the south in the methodist episcopal church; and fills a pastorate in Wheeling, W.Va.

He was elected surveyor of Jefferson county in 1851; and was a member of the state house of representatives of Illinois in 1856-60. He entered the union army in 1861 as a private; was successively elected captain, lieutenant-colonel and colonel; and was brevetted brigadier-general. He was a presidential elector in 1868; was elected a. member of the constitutional convention of Illinois in 1869; and was elected to the state senate of Illinois in 1871 to fill a vacancy. Anderson, William A., lawyer, statesman, was born about 1835 in Botecourt county, Va. He served in the confederate army during the civil war; and
was wounded and

abled for life. He served four years in the Virginia house of delegates; and for four years was a member of the Virginia state senate. In 1900 he was president of the Virginia state bar association. In 1901 and 1903 he was a member of the Virginia state constitutional convention. Since 1901 he has been attorney-general for the state of Virginia.
Anderson, William Belleville, manufacturwas born Jan. 30, 1856, in Centerville, Ohio. Since 1877 he has been secretary of the Buckeye iron and brass works, which employs three hundred skilled workmen. He was the first president of the Dayton fan and motor company. He has been a member of the board of police commissioners; and holds a leading rank in free masonry and other fraternal orders. For several years he was connected with the Ohio state militia. He has been dean of the Brooklyn college of pharmacy; president of the national association of retail druggists; and president of the New York state pharmaceutical association.

He was elected to the Tennessee state legislature in 1880; and was appointed a principal examiner of contested land claims in the general land office in 1889.
