In 1886 he entered the railway service of the Pennsylvania railroad company; and in 1889-93 was assistant road foreman of engines on various divisions. In 1893 he became master mechanic for the Pennsylvania company at Fort Wayne, Ind. In 1896 he was advanced to general superintendent of motive power of the Pennsylvania lines east of Pittsburg and Erie; and since 1903 has been general manager. ager, Ind.

He moved to Ohio in 1811; and for some years was a member of the state legislature and postmaster of Circleville. He was also Indian commissioner under President Jackson. He was the author of A Tour to Prairie du Chien; Western Antiquities; Writings of Caleb Atwater; History of Ohio; and an Essay on Education. He died March 13, 1867, in Circleville, Ohio.
