He is the author of Medulla; and several works in latin. Averell, William Woods, soldier, inventor, was born Nov. 5, 1833, in Cameron, N.Y. He was engaged with the army of the Potomac in its most important
campaigns. In 1863 he began the series of the cavalry raids in western Virginia that made his name famous. He started with a force of five thousand men and drove the confederates out of Greenbrier county, capturing three guns and about one
hundred prisoners. He destroyed the railroad, severing an important line of communication between the confederate generals Lee and Bragg. In the meantime he had been brevetted through the different grades of his reg12

until he was brevet-majorresigned in 1865. He discovered a process for the manufacture of steel directly from the ore in one operation; and invented the Averell insulating conduits for wires and conductors. Averett, Thomas H., congressman, was born in Virginia. He was a, resident of Halifax county. In 1849-53 he was a representative from Virginia to the thirty-first and thirty-second congresses. John Thomas, soldier, manufactucongressman, was born March 1, 1835, in Alna, Maine. In 1858-59 he was a member of the state senate of Minnesota. He entered the union army in 1863 as lieutenant-colonel in the sixth regiment Minnesota infantry; and was mustered out in 1865 as brigadiergeneral of volunteers. Averitt, Kirby Gladstone, physician, surgeon, was born March 10, 1870, in Stedman, N.C. He was educated in the public schools of his native state; and in 1893 graduated with the degree of M.D. from Baltimore medical college. He is an eminent physician and surgeon of Cedar Creek, N.C. ; and identified with the business and public affairs of his community.
Avery, Alexander R., lawyer, was bom Nov. 14, 1846, in Canada. In 1876 he was appointed city attorney of Port Huron, Mich.; was prosecuting attorney in 1884-87; and in 1891 was appointed postmaster. In 1881 he was elected great commander of the order of the knights of maccabees. Avery, Alida Cornelia, educator, physician, suffragist, was born June 11, 1833, in Sherburne, N.Y. She was resident physician and professor of physiology and hygiene in Vassar college; and in 1876-77 was president of the Colorado state suffrage association. Avery, Benjamin Franklin, manufacturer, was born Dec. 3, 1801, in Aurora, N.Y. The principal products of his industry were chilled, wheel gang, shovel, steel, subsoil and sulky plows. The old firm is now incorporated with a capital of one and a half million dollars, the stock being owned almost wholly by the Avery family.
