Abbey, Everett L., educator, author, was born Oct. 10, 1855, in Mayfield, Ohio. He graduated from Wooster university in 1880; and in 1890 traveled in Europe. He is a successful lecturer and educator of Ohio; and superintendent of schools at Kingsville, He is Orrville, Cambridge and Euclid, Ohio. the author of a book on The Passion Play.

Abbey, Henry, journalist, banker, author, poet, was born July 11, 1842, in Rondout, N. Y. He studied at Kingston academy and at the Hudson River inColumbia stitute in county, N.Y. For several years he was engaged in journalism in Rondout, and in New York City, where he was connected with several financial institutions. In 1895 he was president of the national bank of Kingston,N.

Abbey, Henry Eugene, merchant, dramatic manager, was bom June 37, 1846, in Akron, Ohio. He was the manager of Abbey's theater and the Metropolitan opera house of New York City; and of the Tremont theater of Boston, Mass. New York City.

Abbey, Richard, clergyman, theologian, auwas born Nov. 16, 1805, in Genesee county, N.Y. He was a prominent clergyman of the southern methodist church from 1884. He was the author of End of the Apostolic Succession ; Creed of All Men ; Diutumity; Ecce Ecclesia, a Reply to Ecce Homo; and The City of God and the Church Makers. City, Miss. Abbot, Abiel, clergyman, author, was bom Dec. 14, 1765, in Wilton, N.H. In 1827-48 he was a congregational clergyman of Peterborough, N.H. He was the author of a History of Andover; and a Genealogy of the Abbot Family. He died Jan. 31, 1859, in West Cambridge, Mass. Abbot, Abiel, clergyman, author, was bom Aug. 17, 1770, in Andover, Mass. In 1802-28 he was a congregational clergyman of Beverly, Mass. He was the author of Letters From Cuba; and of Sermons with Memoir, published in 1831. He died June 7, 1828, on Staten Island, N.Y.

Abbot, Alice Balch, author, was born Feb. Brooklyn, N.Y. In 1889 she graduated from Mount Holyoke college. Since 1893 she has been a contributor of short stories to the St. Nicholas Magazine. She is the author of A Frigate's Namesake. Abbot, Benjamin, clergyman, evangelist, was born about 1732 on Long Island, N.Y. 11, 1867, in

Wonderful conversions were ascribed to him; and the story of his life has for a century been a typical one for the methodists, of which denomination he was an early apostle. He died Aug. 14, 1796, in Salem, N. J. Abbot, Benjamin, educator, college presiwas born about 1762. In 1811-38 he had charge of the academy of Exeter, N.H. Among the pupils under his training were Daniel Webster, Edward Everett and George Bancroft. He died in 1838 in Exeter, N.H. Abbot, Charles Wheaton, naval officer, was born Nov. 18, 1829, in Warren, R. I. During the civil war he participated in the capture of the ports at Hatteras Inlet; was at the capture of forts Jackson and St. Philips, and the city of New Orleans; and at the first attack on the Vicksburg batteries. In 1871 he was promoted to pay inspector and the same year became pay director. In 1891 he was retired with the rank of captain. He died Dec. 26, 1907, in Warren, Pa. dent,

Abbot, Ezra, theologian, educator, author,

was born April 28, 1819, in Jackson, Maine. He was a unitarian biblical scholar of much prominence; and in 1872-84 was professor in the divinity school of Harvard university. He was the author of Literature of the Doctrine of a Future Life; Authenticity of the

Fourth

Gospel; and The Fourth Gospel and Other Critical Essays. He died March 21, 1884, in

Cambridge, Mass. Abbot, Edwin Hale, lawyer, railroad president, was born Jan. 26, 1834, in Beverly, Mass. In 1851 he graduated from the Boston Latin school; from Harvard college in 1855; and from Harvard law school in 1862 with the degree of LL.B. In 1862-76 he practiced law in Boston; then practiced in Milwaukee, Wis.; and practiced also at the bar of the supreme court of the United States. For twelve years he was trustee in possession of the Wisconsin central railroad; president of the Wisconsin central associated lines and systems; and author of its plan of reorganization in 1879, which created the first voting

He was vice-president and mortgage trustee of the Chicago and great western railroad; a director in the Northern pacific railway; a, director in the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe railway; and a director in many other companies, banks and corporations. He has been a university lecturer on corporate organizations and kindred topics ; and has contributed to the North American Review and other publications. He retired from active business in 1899. trust.
