Pennsylvania. In 1861 he was captaih in the eighty-second regiment Pennsylvania volunteer infantry; became colonel in 1863; and in 1864 was brevetted brigadier-general of volunteers. He died Oct. 3, 1869, in Pennsylvania.

Bassett, J. Anthony, educator, author, was born Dec. 26, 1850, in Denmark, N.Y. He received a thorough education in the Lowville academy and at the Rochester university. For twelve years he was in charge of the departments of science and mathematics in the old Gouverneur Wesleyan seminary; and in 1887 assumed the principalship of the Richfield Springs union schools. In 1898-99 he was president of the Otsego county principals' conference. He is the author of Longitude and Time. Bassett, James, clergyman, missionary, author, was born Jan. 31, 1834, in Canada. In 1856 he graduated from the Wabash college with the degree of A.B'.; and in 1859 received the degree of A.M. from the same institution. In 1871-84 he was missionary to Persia. He is the author of Persia: Land of the Ismans Persia, Eastern Mission Translations from English and Turkish; and Hymns in

Persian. Bassett, John Spencer, educator, author, was born Sept. 10, 1867, in Tarborough, N.C. He ia a, successful educator; and since 1893 professor of history in Trinity college at Durham, N.C. He is the author of The Constitutional Beginnings of <North Carolina; Slavery and Servitude in the Colony of North Carolina; The Regulators of North Carolina; Suffrage in North Carolina; Antislavery leaders in North Carolina; and History of Slavery in the State of North Carolina.

Bassett, Richard Baxter, jurist, United States senator, governor, was bom in Delaware. He was a member from Delaware of the convention which formed the constitution, and signed that instrument. In 1789-93 he was a United States senator. He was a presidential elector in 1797; and was the first man who cast his vote for locating the seat of government on the Potomac. He was chief justice of the federal supreme court; and governor of Delaware in 1798-1801. He died Sept. 18, 1815, in Delaware.

through the United States, he became organist at Calvary church of East Orange, N.J. Bassett, Thomas J., educator, clergyman, college president, author, was born Aug. 9, 1848, in Yates county, N.Y. In 1875 he graduated from De Pauw university ;he subsequently received the degree of Ph.D. from the Syracuse university; and in 1903 received the degree of D.D. from Cornell university. In 1871-85 he was instructor in De Pauw university; in 1881-84 was principal of Jennings seminary at Aurora,, 111.; and in 188497 was principal of the academy at De Pauw university. He has filled pastorates in the methodist episcopal church at Lafayette and Thorntown, Ind. Since 1903 he has been president of the Upper Iowa university at Fayette. He is the author of History of Greencastle, Ind.

George Washington, lawyer, statesman, was born Feb. 18, 1836, in Danville, Vt. He received a thorough education and in 1851 graduated from the university of Vermont. He achieved success js a lawyer; and in 1873-74 was a member of the Minnesota state senate. In 1864 he was democratic candidate for district judge; in 1868 was a candidate for congress; and in 1888 was a democratic candidate for judge of the supreme court of Minnesota.
