Baxter, Nathaniel, lawyer, jurist. He was a prominent jurist of Tennessee. He died Jan. 3, 1895, in Nashville, Tenn. Baxter, Portus, merchant, legislator, congressman, was born in Brownington, Vt. In 1861-67 he was a representative from Vermont to the thirty-seventh, thirty-eighth and thirty-ninth congresses. He was a delegate to the Philadelphia loyalists' convention of 1866. Bayard, James Asheton, lawyer, diplomat, congressman and United States senator, was born July 28, 1767, in Philadelphia, Pa. He graduated at Princeton college in 1784; after studying law at Philadelphia, he com-

Bay, William V. W., lawyer, jurist, congressman, was bom in New York. He moved to Franklin county, Mo. In 1849-51 he was a representative from Missouri to the thirtyfirst congress. In 1863-65 he was a judge of the supreme court of Missouri. He died in Franklin county, Mo. Bayard, George Dashiell, army officer, was born Dec. 18, 1835, in Seneca Falls, N.Y. He was four years on frontier and garrison duty; and was severely wounded in a fight with the Kiowa Indiana. In 1861 he was cavalry instructor at West Point; and became brigadier-general of volunteers in 1862. He was mortally wounded at Fredericksburg Dee. 13, 1862, and died the following day. He was buried with military honors at Princeton, N.J. A memorial volume by his father, Samuel J. Bayard, was published in New York in 1874. He died Dec. 14, 1862, in

He was the son of the United States senator bearing the same name; and a brother of Richard H. Bayard, In 1851-69 he was a United States senator; and in 1863 he was elected for the third term, but resigned in January, 1864. In 1867 he was appointed to a seat in the senate to fill a vacancy, and subsequently received the election to that office. He was a delegate to the New York convention of 1868. He died June 13, 1880, in Wilmington, Del.

Bayard, Nicholas, colonial official, was born about 1644, in Holland. He came to America in 1647; and after the reconquest of New York by the Dutch in 1672 became secretary of the province. He died in 1707 in

he purchased an estate at Princeton, N. J. For several years he was a member of the New Jersey state legislature; and for a long period presiding judge of the court of common pleas of Somerset county. He was one of the founders of Princeton theological seminary; and joined with Ellas Boudinot in establishing the American bible society and the New Jersey bible society. He was the author of several law compilations. He died May n'.. 1840, in Princeton, N.J.
