Abbott, Lyman, lawyer, clergyman, journalist, author, was born Dec. 18, 1835, in Roxbury, Mass. He is a congregational minister of broad views ; and is editor of the Illustrated Christian Weekly. He was the successor to Henry Ward Beecher as pastor of Plymouth church of Brooklyn. He is also editor of The Outlook. Abbott, Mrs. Mary Perkins, journalist, author, was born Oct. 17, 1857, in Salem, Mass. In 1893-1904 she was book-reviewer of the
Chicago Times-Herald.
She was the author

Abbott, Robert Osborne, army surgeon, was born in 1824 in Pennsylvania. He entered the army in 1849 as assistant surgeon; and in that capacity accompanied Magruder's battery to California. He subsequently served in the East, Florida and in Texas; and in 1861 was assistant to the chief medical purveyor in New York. In 1862 he was appointed medical director of the department of Washington, having charge o^all the hospitals in and about the capital, together with all the hosgress.

Abbott, Samuel Appleton Browne, lawyer, statesman, was bom March 6, 1846, in Lowell, Mass. In 1866 he graduated from Harvard university. In 1868 he began the practice of law in Boston, Mass.; in 1879 he became a trustee of the Boston public library; in 1888 was president of the board; and for several years was acting librarian. He was a nominee for lieutenant-governor of Massachusetts. In 1897 he took charge of the American college of architecture in
Rome,
Italy.
Abbott, Samuel Warren, physician, surgeon, author, was born June 12, 1837, in Wob-urn, Mass. In 1861-64 he was assistant surgeon to the Massachusetts cavalry. He has practiced medicine in Woburn and Wakefield, Mass.; and in 1886-1904 was secretary of the Massachusetts state board of health. He is the author of the Past and Present Condition of State Hygiene and State Medicine in the United States. He died in 1904 in Newton Center, Mass. Abbott, Russell Bigelow, clergyman, educator, college president, author, was born Aug. 8, 1823, near Brookville, Ind. He received his education at the Indiana university; and in 1850-55 was principal of Newcastle seminary, and of the presbyterian for the two succeeding years. In 1857

June 13, 1804, in New Brunswick, N.J. He was a missionary of the reformed church in China. He was the author of Journal of a Residence in China; A Missionary Convention at Jerusalem; and The Claims of the World to the Gospel. He died Sept. 4, 1846, in Albany, N.Y. Abeel, Gustavus, clergyman, theologian, was born June 6, 1801, in New York City. In 1826 he became a minister of the reformed church. In 1829-44 he filled a pastorate in Geneva, N.Y.; and in 1844-64 filled a pastorate in the new second reformed church. He was an active member of the New Jersey historical society. He died Sept. 4, 1887, in
Stamford, N.Y.
