was the author of Socialism and Christianity; The Philosophy of Preaching; The World for Christ; and The Old Testament Under Fire. He died in 1900 in Brooklyn. Beidler, Jacob Atlee, merchant, congressman, was born Nov. 3, 1853, near Valley Forge, Pa. He is a successful coal operator

of Willoughby, Ohio.

In 1901-07 he was a representative from Ohio to the fifty- seventh, fifty-eighth and fifty-ninth congresses as a republican. Beirne, Andrew, congressman, was born in Ireland. In 1837-41 he was a representative from Virginia to the twenty-fifth and twenty-sixth congresses. He died in Virginia. of Maryland. Belcher, Hiram, lawyer, legislator, congressman, was born June 10, 1790, in Augusta, Maine. For four years he was a member of the Maine state- legislature. In 1847-49 he was a representative from Maine to the thirtieth congress. He died May 7, 1857, in Augusta, Maine. Belcher, Isaac S., lawyer, jurist. In 187274 he was associate justice of the supreme court of California. Belcher, Jonathan, merchant, governor, was born Jan. 8, 1681. He was a merchant of Boston, Mass.; and in 1730-41 was colonial governor of Massachusetts. In 1741-47 he 1747-57 was governor of New Jersey. He diwas governor of New Hampshire; and in ed Aug. 31, 1757, in Elizabethtown, N.J. Belcher, Joseph, clergyman, author, was born April 15, 1794, in Birmingham, England. He was a baptist clergyman of Philadelphia, Pa. His complete works number over two hundred volumes. Among them are The Baptist Pulpit of the United States; The Clergy of America; History of Religious Denominations in the United States; and Hymns and Their Authors. He died July 10, 1859, in Philadelphia, Pa. Belcher, Nathan, manufacturer, lawyer, congressman, was born June 23, 1813, in Griswold, Conn. He was a. member of the liouse of representatives of Connecticut in 1846-47; and of the state senate in 1850. He was a presidential elector in 1852. In 185355 he was a representative from Connecticut to the thirty-third congress as a democrat. He died June 3, 1891, In New London, Conn. Belcher, Samuel Clifford, soldier, lawyer.

He is the discoverer of therapeutic use of venom of the Gila monster for paralysis, locomotor ataxia and kindred disorders. He is the author of Orations and Addresses; and various Masonic Reports and Reviews. Belden, George 0., congressman, was born in New York City. lin 1827-39 he was a representative from New York to the twentieth congress. Belden, Henry Melvin, educator, author, was born Oct. 3, 1865, in Wilton, Conn. In 1890 he was instructor of English at the Lehigh university; and since 1906 he has been professor of English language and literature at the university of Missouri. He is the author of Anglo-Saxon Prose. Belden, James Jerome, banker, congressman, was born Sept. 30, 1825, in Fabius, N. Y. He was a charter member of the order of the founders and patriots of America. He was president and the principal owner of the Robert Gere bank of

Syracuse, which he had founded; and was trustee of the Syracuse university from its foundation. He was the mayor of Syracuse in 1877; and re-elected in 1878 without opposition; was a delegate to the republican national convention at Chicago in 1880. a republican. He died in 1903 in Syracuse, N.Y. Belden, Mrs. Jessie Van Zile, genealogist, author, was born Nov. 13, 1857, in Troy, N. Y. She is the wife of James Mead Belden of Syracuse, N.Y. In 1898-99 she was state regent of the daughters of the American revolution; and is a member of the board of managers of the New York state reformatory. She is the author of Fate at the Door; The King's Ward; Antonia; and a genealogical work entitled Concerning the Ancestors and Descendants of Royal Denison Belden. fifth congresses as
