Samuel, lawyer, United States senator, governor, was born Feb. 9, 1770, in Londonderry, N.H. He was a member of the Bell,
New Hampshire
state legislature in 1804-08,
occupying the position of speaker. In 1807-08 he was a member of the state senate and in 1809 was a member of the executive council. Ih 1816-19 he was judge of the superior court of the state; and in 1819-23 was governor. In 1823-35 he was United States senator. He died Dec. 28, 1850, in Chester, N.H. Bell, Samuel Dana, lawyer, jurist, was born Oct. 9, 1798, in Francestown, N.H. He removed to Manchester in 1839 and practiced law in that city until the time of his death. He was a justice of the superior court; in 1855 justice of the supreme court; and in 1859-64 served as chief justice. He died July, 31, 1868, in Chester, N.H. Bell, Samuel Newell, lawyer, congressman, was born March 35, 1829, in Chester, N.H. In 1871-77 he was a representative from New Hampshire to the forty-second and fortyfourth congresses. He was subsequently ap;
pointed chief justice of the supreme court of New Hampshire. He died Feb. 8, 1889, in Manchester, N.H. Bell, Theodore Arlington, lawyer, congressman, was born July 25, 1872, in Vallejo, C'al. He is a successful lawyer of Napa, Cal.; and in 1894-1903 was district attorney for Napa county. In 1903-05 he was a representative from California to the fifty-eighth congress as a democrat. Bell, Theodore S., physician, scientist, bom in 1807 in Kentucky. He was appointed professor of medicine and hygiene in the university of Louisville; and was editor of the Louisville Medical Journal. These positions placed him in the front rank of his profession. He died Dec. 28, 1884, in Louisville, Ky. Bell, Thomas Montgomery, soldier, congressman, was bom on Oct. 1, 1837, in Williamsburg, Pa. In 1862 he graduated with the degree of A.M. from Wittenberg college of Springfield, Ohio. For six years he was clerk of- the superior court for Hall county, Ga. In 1863 he entered the union army as first lieutenant in the eighty-sixth Ohio Infantry; became captain in the independent troop of Pennsylvania cavalry and was captain in the thirteenth Pennsylvania cavalry in 1863-65. In 1866-67 he was second lieutenant in the seventh United States cavalry and became captain in 1876. In 1896 he was promoted to major in the first United States cavelry; was colonel in the eighth United States cavalry in 1900-01 was colonel in the twenty-seventh United States infantry in 1899; and ha was brigadier-general United States volunteers in 1900-01. In 1901 he was made brigadier-general in the United States
retired from active service. He has been several times brevetted for gallant and
army and

meritorious services. He served through the civil war, was in the Indian wars, the Cuban war and the Philippine Islands; and has been three times wounded. In 1900-01 he was military governor of the third district, department Southern Luzon. He is prominently identified with the business and public affairs of Gainesville, Ga. In 1905-11 he was a, representative from Georgia to the fifty-ninth, sixtieth and sixty-first congresses as a democrat. Bell,

of Pennsylvania. Bell, William Allen, journalist, educator, college president, was born Jan. 30, 1833, In Clinton county, Ind. He became principal of the Indianapolis high school; was president of the Indiana School Journal, which publiand for thirty years was editor and publisher of the Indiana School Journal, which publication he disposed of in 1899 to accept the presidency of his alma mater. He is one of the oldest educational editors in the United States. Bell, William Hemphill, soldier, was born Jan. 28, 1834, in West Chester, Pa. He took all grades in the army, from brevetted second lieutenant to brigadier-general and commissary-general United States army. He served tluring the civil war in the line of the army, in the field and in the subsistence department. He died in 1906 in Arvada, Col. Bell, William Melvin, clergyman, bishop, author^ was born Nov. 12, 1860, in Whitley county, Ind. In 1879 he graduated from Roanoke classical seminary of Indiana; and subsequently received the degree of D.D. from the American temperance university. In 1879-93 he was pastor at La Grange, Lafayette, Ligonier and Elkhart, Ind. In 189093 he was president and superintendent of the Indiana Sunday school association; and in 1893-1905 was general secretary of the department of home and foreign missions. Since 1905 he has been bishop of the church of the United brethren in Christ at Los Angeles, Cal.; and his diocese of the Pacific includes conferences in Japan, China and the Philippines. Since 1907 he has been president of the California Sunday school association. He is the author of The Love of God; and The Social Message of Our Lord. Bellamont, Earl, colonial governor. In 1697-1701 he was colonial govenor of New York; and was also colonial governor of Massachusetts at the same time. He was colonial governor of New Hampshire in 170216.
