Benton, Josiah Henry, lawyer, author, was born Aug. 4, 1843, in Addison, Vt. In 186773 he practiced law in Lancaster, N.H.; and since 1873 has practiced his profession in Boston, Mass.. In 1894-1906 he was a lecturer on corporations and railroads at the Boston university law school. He is the author of Samuel Slade Benton, his Ancestors and Descendants; A Notable Libel Suit; and Early Census-Making in Massachusetts. Benton, Lemuel, congressman, was born in South Carolina. In 1793-99 he was a representative from South Carolina to the third, fourth a,nd fifth congresses. Benton, Thomas Hart, lawyer, congressman. Benton, Maecenas E., lawyer, congressman, 39, 1849, in Obion county, Tenn. He has been a delegate to several democratic state conventions, held in Missouri; and was president of the conventions held in 1890 and 1896. eighth congresses as a democrat. Benton, William Plummer, soldier, was born Dec. 25, 1828, in Newmarket, Md. In 1856 he became judge of the common pleas court. When Fort Sumter was fired upon, he was the first man in Wayne county to respond to the president's call for seventyfive thousand men. He commanded a brigade at Pea Ridge; and was promoted to brigadier-general for gallantry. He was in the battles of Port Gibson, Jackson, Champion Hills, Black River Bridge and Mobile. He died March 14, 1867, in New Orleans, La. Berard, Augusta Blanche, educator, author, was born Oct. 29, 1824, is West Point, N.Y. She is an educational writer of Hackensack, N.J. She is the author of School History of the United States; School History of England; Manual of Spanish Art and Literature; and Reminiscences of West Point in the Olden Time. Berard, Claudius, educator, author, was born March 31, 1786, in Bordeaux, France. In 1815-48 he was professor of French in the United States military academy of West Point. He was the author of several educational works. He died May 6, 1848, at West Point, N.Y. Berckley, William, colonial governor. He was four times cglonial governor of Virginia, serving as such in 1641-52 and 1659-77. He died in Virginia. Berdan, Hiram, soldier, inventor, was bom about 1823, in Plymouth, Mich. He attained great skill as a marksman; and in 1861 was made colonel of the first regiment United States sharpshooters, which he had organized. He was brevetted brigadier-general of volunteers •for his conduct at Chancellorsville; and major-general for gallantry at Gettysburg. After the close of the civil war he went to Russia and spent several years in superintending the manufacture of his rifle there for the Russian government. In 1888 he returned and sued the United States for $500,000 for infringing his patents in the Springfield rifle; and in 1892 the court of claims awarded him one hundred thousand dollars. He died March 31, 1893, in Washington, D.C. Berenson, Bemhard, critic, historian, author, was born June 36, 1865, in Russia. He is the writer of history and criticism of Italian paintings. He is the author of Venetian Painters of the Renaissance; Florentine Painters of the Renaissance; Central Italian Painters of the Renaissance.
