born in 1799 in New York City. At the time of the desolation of New York by Asiatic cholera in 1833, he was among the few that remained at the post of duty. For more than a century a considerable part of Williamsburg, now Brooklyn, had belonged to his family. He identified himself with the interests of the place when it was made a city, and became its first mayor. He also assisted very materially in the establishment of important ferries connecting with New York. In 1861 he went out as surgeon in the thirty-eighth regiment New York infantry. He died Oct. 32, 1865, in Brooklyn, N.Y. Berry, Albert Seaton, lawyer, congressman, was born in Campbell county, Ky. He served two terms in the state senate; and five terms was mayor of Newport, Ky. In 1893-1901 he was a representative from

Kentucky to the fifty -third, fifty-fourth, fifty-fifth and fifty- sixth congresses as a democrat. He died in 1908 in Newport, Ky. Berry, Campbell man, was born Nov.

Berry, George Ricker, educator, author, was born Oct. 15, 1865, in West Sumner, Maine. Since 1898 he has been professor of Semetie languages at Colgate university. He is the author of New Lexicon of the New Testament; and The Book of Proverbs.

Hiram George,

soldier, was born Thomaston, Maine. He entered the union army and was made colonel of the fourth regiment Maine infantry. He was promoted brigadier-general in 1863; and was appointed major-general of volunteers in 1863. He died May 2, 1863, in Chan' cellorsville, Va.

He removed to Arkansas in 1848; entered the confederate army in 1861 as second lieutenant in the sixteenth regiment Arkansas infantry; and lost a leg at the battle of Corinth in 1863. He was elected to the state legislature of Arkansas in 1866; was reelected in 1872; and was elected speaker of the house at the extraordinary session of 1874. He was president of the democratic state convention in 1876; and was elected judge of the circuit court in 1878. In 188385 he was the sixteenth governor of Arkansas. In 1887-1907 he was a member of the United States senate. Berry, John, lawyer, congressman, was born April 26, 1833, in Crawford county, Ohio. He practiced law at Upper Sandusky; and was prosecuting attorney of Wyandot county in 1862 and in 1864. In 1873-75 he was a representative from Ohio to the fortythird congress as a democrat. In 18901904 he was editor of the Epworth Herald. In 1904 he was consecrated bishop in BufSince 1904 he has been president falo, N.Y. of the

Epworth

league.

Berry, Lucien W., college president, founder, was born in 1815 in Alburg, Vt. In 184955 he was president of DePauw university; and then was president of the Iowa Wesleyan university for three years. He entered into the project of founding a methodist college at Jefferson City, Mo. He died July 33, 1858, in Cincinnati, Ohio. Berry, Nathaniel S., soldier, state senator, governor, was born Sept. 1, 1796, in Bath, Maine. He was educated in the common schools of New England. In 1820 he moved to Bristol, N.H.; was a member of the New Hampshire state legislature in 1838, 1833, 1834 and 1837; in 1854 represented the town of Hebron; and in 1835-36 was a member of the state senate of New Hampshire. He was the

twenty-sixth governor of New Hampshire in 1861-63, taking an active interest in raising troops for the civil war. He died April 27, 1894, in Bristol, N.H.

Berry, Robert Mallory, naval officer, was 38, 1846, in Henry county, Ky. He entered the United States navy in 1866 and was promoted to rear admiral' in 1900. Since 1903 he has been commandant of several navy yards; and in 1906-07 was commandant of the Norfolk navy yard.
