He is a contributor on educatonal topics to several papers and journals. He is the author of The Vegetable Alkaloids; and several translations. Biddle, Horace P., lawyer, jurist, author, poet, was born March 34, 1811, in Hocking county, Ohio. He acquired a. knowledge of Latin, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese and several eastern languages. In 1839 he opened a law office in Logansport, Ind.; rose to the first rank in his profession; and received the highest judicial honors of the state. He was a member of the constitutional convention which formed the present constitution of the state. He is the author of The Musical Scale; Elements of Knowledge; Few Poems; Biddle's Poems;

American Boyhood; Last Poems; A Glance at the World; and a volume entitled Prose Miscellany. In childhood he showed an intense love of music; and thirty years after
the publication of The Musical Scale, his theory was proved to be true by demonstrative evidence. He died May 13, 1900, in Logansport, Ind. Biddle, Jacob Albert, clergyman, college president, author, was born Dec. 24, 1845, in Rochester, Ohio. He has been president of the Philomath college of Oregon. Biddle, James, soldier, was born Feb. 28, 1783, in Philadelphia, Pa. In 1845 he was United States commissioner to ratify a treaty with China ; visited Japan in the Columbus; commanded the squadron on the west coast of Mexico during the war; and in 183842 had charge of the naval asylum on the Schuylkill. He died Oct. 1, 1848, in Philadelphia, Pa. Biddle, James Stokes, soldier, railroad president, was born Jan. 15, 1818, in Philadelphia, Pa. He served in the Florida war; commanded a gunboat during the Mexican war; and was with the naval t)atteries in the siege of Vera Cruz and the capture of Tobasco. He was president of the Shamokin valley railroad. He died in Philadelphia, Pa. Biddle, John, soldier, congressman, was born March 9, 1789, in Philadelphia, Pa. He wag an officer in the war of 1812; held the position of paymaster in the army ; and also that of Indian agent. In 1829-31 he was a territorial delegate from Michigan to the twenty-first congress, when he was appointed register of the land office at Detroit, Mich. He died Aug. 25, 1859, at White Sulphur Springs, Va. Biddle, Nicholas, naval officer, was bom Sept. 10, 1750, in Philadelphia, Pa. In 1775 congress passed a resolution appointing nineteen naval officers, of whom five were captains. Nicholas Biddle, one of these, was assigned to the Andrea Doria, an armed brig. He was the author of Commercial Digest; and History of the Expedition under Lewis and Clark to the Missouri River. He died Feb. 27, 1844, in Philadelphia, Pa. Biddle, Richard, lawyer, congressman, author, was born March 2.5, 1796, in Philadelphia, Pa.; and was a brother of Nicholas Biddle. He served during the war of 1812 in the protection of Philadelphia. He became a leader of the Pittsburg bar. In 1837-41 he was a representative from Pennsylvania to the twenty-fifth and twenty-sixth congresses. While in England he published an expose of Captain Basil Hall's Travels in America; and his Life of Sebastian Cabot brought to light new and important facts in the discovery of America. He died July 7, 1847, in Pittsburg, Pa.
