Sacramento, Cal. Bigler, William, journalist, governor. United States senator, was born in December, 1814, in Shermansburg, Pa. In 1841 he was elected to the Pennsylvania state convention. He was a member of the state senate up to 1847; and part of the time was speaker. In 1853-55 he was the twelfth governor of Pennsylvania; subsequently became president of the Philadelphia and Erie railroad company. In 1855-61 he was United States senator. He died Aug. 9, 1880, in Clearfield, Pa. Biglow, William, educator, author, was born on Sept. 33, 1773, in Natiek, Mass. He taught a village school in Maine ; and in later life was a proof-reader in the university press at Cambridge, Mass. He was the author of History of Natiek; History of Sherburne; The Youth's Library; and Introduction to the Making of Latin. He died Jan. 13, 1844, in Boston, Mass. Bignell, Mrs. Effie Molt, litterateur, author, was born in 1855 in Burlington, Vt. She is the widow of William J. Bignell of Quebec, Canada. She is'a member of the American ornithological union. Graycoats. Bigney, Mark Frederick, journalist, author, was born in 1817 in Nova Scotia." In 1865 he became managing editor of the New Orleans Times. In 1867 he was one of the founders of the New Orleans City Item. He was the author of a volume of poems. Bignon, Fleming Giandtland Du, lawyer, jurist, statesman, was born July 25, 1853, in Milledgeville, Ga. In 1877-79 he was county judge of Baldwin county, Ga.; in 1880 was a member of the state legislature; in 1883 became a member of the Georgia state senate; and in 1888 and 1889 was president of the state senate. In 1896 he was an unsuccessful candidate for United States senator on the gold platform. Bigot, William Valentine, clergyman, founder, was born Dec. 4, 1838, in Germany. He came to the United States in 1847 ; and wag placed in charge of the large congregation of St. Michael's Loramie at Berlin, Ohio. He built the St. Michael's church, which is admired for its beauty, solidity and minor equipment. Bikle, Philip Melanchthon, educator, author, was born Dec. 1, 1844, in Smithsburg, Md. Since 1880 he has been editor of the Lutheran Quarterly; and since 1874 has been professor of latin in Pennsylvania college at Gettysburg and its dean since 1889. In 1899 he translated Melanchthon's Apology of the Augsburg Confessions from the Latin.

He received his education in the academies at Worcester and at 'Wilbraham, Mass.; and the Suffield literary institution of Connecticut. He graduated from the law school in 1854; and has attained prominence as an able lawyer of Rockville, Conn. He was appointed state's attorney for Tolland county in 1869; and held that office for twentyfour years. He is now judge of the Rockville city court; corporation counsel for the city; and president of the savings bank of Rockville. Although he has devoted himself very closely to his profession he has taken time to travel extensively on the American continent and in Europe. Bill, Charles, publisher, traveler, was born June 7, 1840. He graduated from Norwich academy; and in 1864 graduated from Yale college. For many years hq was engaged in the subscription book publishing business in 111.; subsequently was in Springfield, Mass.; and retired from active business in 1873. Bill, Edward Lyman, journalist, author, was born June 5, 1862, in Lyme, Conn. He was educated at the Connecticut state normal school; and at the Wesleyan university. Then for some years he was engaged in teaching and elocutionary work. He was an
officer in
the
first
military organization in
Dakota territory; saw service on the plains; was elected police justice; and for a number of years was engaged in business in Fargo, N.D. In 1887 he became part owner of the Music Trade Review of New York vjity; and in 1891 became sole proprietor. He has been vice-president of the New York press club; president of the Republican club; vicepresident of the New Rochelle park association; commissioner of education; and a member of the National geographical society. In 1904 he was a treasurer of the state commission to the St. Louis exposition. He is the author of The Last of the Danvers ; and The Sword of the Pyramids.
