Black, James A., soldier, congressman, was born in 1793 in Abbeville, S.C. He served as captain in the war of 1812. He was a representative from South Carolina in 1843-48 to the twenty-eighth, twenty-ninth and thirtieth congresses as a democrat. He died April 5, 1848, in Washington, D.C. Black, James C. C, soldier, lawyer, congressman, was born May 9, 1842, in Stamping Ground, Ky. He was a private soldier in company A, ninth Kentucky cavalry confederate army. In 1893-95 he was representative to the fifty-third and fifty-fourth congresses as a democrat. Black, James Fred, clergyman, author, was born Nov. 20, 1858, in Mill Village, Nova Scotia. In 1888 he received the degree of A.M. from Cornell college of Iowa; and is a clergyman of the methodist episcopal church. He has been secretary of the Algona district conference for five terms; and now fills a pastorate in Eldora, Iowa. He is the author of The Bible Way. Black, James Rush, physician, surgeon, author, was bom March 3, 1827, near Glasgow, Scotland. During the civil war he was surgeon in the one hundred and thirteenth regiment Ohio volunteer infantry; and director of General Gilbert's staff. Later he became professor of hygiene in the Columbus medical college. He is the author of Ten Laws of Health. Black, Jeremiah Sullivan, lawyer, iurist, was born Jan. 10, 1810, in Glades, Pa. In 1842 he was appointed presiding judge of the judicial district in which he lived; in 1851-54 was chief justice of the supreme court of Pennsylvania. In 1857-60 he was attorney-general; and in 1860-61 he was secretary of state. He died Aug. 9, 1883, in York, Pa. Black, John, LTnited States senator, was born in Virginia. In 1869 he engaged in the cotton brokerage business; and was a member of the New York cotton exchange. He was one of the organizers of the confederate veteran camp of New York. works. Black, Joseph S., soldier, farmer, merchant, bishop, was born July 14, 1836, in Ireland. In 1840 he came to America; and received his education in various district schools. Since 1835 he has been prominently identified with the business and public affairs of the west; and served as a soldier in the Indian wars from private to major. He has for many years been a successful farmer and merchant of Utah; and a, well-known citizen of Hinckley. For thirty years he has been a bishop of the Mormon church.
