Blackwell, Alice Stone, journalist, publisher, author, was bom Sept. 14, 1857, in Orange, N.J.; and is a daughter of Henry B. Blackwell and Lucy Stone. In 1881 she graduated from Boston university; and at once began to help her father and mother in editing the Woman's Journal of Boston, Mass. She is recording secretary of the National American woman suffrage association and a trustee of the Boston university. She is the author of a book of translations of Armenian poems; translations of Russian poems; and compiler, with Rev. Anna H. Shaw and Miss Lucy E. Anthony, of The Yellow Ribbon Speaker.

In 1883 he took up a site at what is now Blackwell, on the Cherokee strip in Oklahoma territory, a location not at the time highly prized by others. He has been its mayor and justice of the peace. Blackwell, Emily, educator, physician, founder, was born in 1836 in England. She established in New York City a hospital conducted entirely by women; and was the head and a professor in that institution. Blackwell, James Shannon, educator, was born Nov. 30, 1844, in Kentucky. In 1879-94 he was a professor of languages and for a short time chairman of the university of Missouri. He is the author of German Prefixes and Suffixes ; and other works on different languages. Blackwell, John, colonial govej-nor. In 1688-93 he was colonial governor of Pennsylvania. Blackwell, Julius W., congressman, was born in Virginia. In 1839-45 he was a representative from Tennessee to the twentysixth and twenty-eighth congresses. He died in Tennessee.

Blackwell, Mrs. Lucy Stone, abolitionist, was born Aug. 13, 1818, in West Brookfield, Mass. She became an agent and lecturer for

the Massachusetts anti-slavery society, in which capacity she often pleaded for the rights of women as well as for those of the slave. In 1855 she was married to Henry B. Blackwell, but still retained her maiden name. She died Oct. 18, 1893, in Dorchester,

He is the author of Diseases of Heart and Lung; and other medical works. Blackwood, William G., lawyer, jurist, was born in Pennsylvania. He settled in Missouri, from which state he was appointed a justice of the United States court for the territory of New Mexico. Bladen, Thomas, governor, lived in the eighteenth century. In 1743-46 he was colonial governor of Maryland; and during his administration the western boundary of the province was fixed by treaty with the Indians; and the manufacture of flour began to attract the attention of the government.
