Blanton, Lindsay Hughes, clergyman, college president, was born on Jan. 29, 1832, In Cumberland county, Va. He was educated at Hampden -Sidney college, at Union theological seminary of Virginia, and at Danville theological seminary of Kentucky. He has been a successful clergyman of the presbyterian church since 1857; and was chaplain in 186165 in the confederate army. In 1868-80 he was pastor of the presbyterian church at Paris, Ky.; and since 1880 has been chancellor of the Central university at Richmond, Ky. Blanton, William Lafayette, lawyer, statesman, was born Dec. 28, 1851, in Unionville, Tenn. He was educated at the Unionville academy of Tennessee. He soon attained success in the practice of law; and in 1880-86 served three terms as city attorney of Gainesville, Texas. In 1904 he was elected a representative from Cooke county to the twenty-ninth state legislature of Texas; and in 1906 received the re-election without opposition. He was one of the authors of the state bank law; and the author of what is now known as the Blanton pure food law. Blasdel, Henry Goode, soldier, miner, governor, was born Jan. 20, 1825, in Lawrenceburg, Ind. In 1861 he engaged in mining in Nevada. In 1864 he served in the civil war. In 1864-71 he was the first governor of Nevada. He again turned his attention to mining. He died July 26, 1900, in Fruitvale, Cal. Blashfield, Edwin Bowland, painter, was born Dec. 15, 1848, in New York City. In 1888 he became a member of the National academy of design. Y. In 1854 he began the manufacture of lead in Chicago, 111. His firm of E. W. Blatchford has been extremely successful. Since 1885 he has been vice-president of the American board of commissioners for foreign missions.
Blatchford, Richard Milford, lawyer, legiswas born April 33, 1798, in Stratford, Conn. In 1826 he was made a financial agent for the bank of England; and in 1833 appointed to the same position by the bank of the United States, and assisted in winding up its affairs. In 1855 he was elected to the state legislature; in 1859 became commissioner of Central park, and subsequently of the public parks generally. When the civil war commenced he was entrusted with funds for the recruiting service; and in 1862 was appointed minister to Italy. He died Sept. 3, 1875, in Newport, R.I. lator, diplomat,
Blatchford, Samuel, clergyman, college president, was born in 1767 in England. He was pastor of churches at Waterford and
Lansingburg, N.Y.; and at the same time was principal of the academy in the latter town. In 1834-38 he was first president of Rensselaer polytechnic institute. He died March 27, 1828, in Lansingburg, N.Y. Blatchford, Samuel, lawyer, jurist, was born March 9, 1820, in New York City. He was private secretary to W. H. Seward in 1839-41; and military secretary on the governor's staff up to 1843. In 1867 he was appointed district judge of the United States court for the southern district of New York and in 1882-93 was an associate justice of the United States supreme court. He died July 7, 1893, in Newport, R.I. Blatchford, Thomas Wyndeatt, physician, surgeon, was born in 1794 in England. He was president of the New York state medical society; and was vice-president of the American medical society. He was a successful physician in Troy for forty years. He died Dec. 23, 1866, in Troy, N.Y. Blatchley, Willis Stanley, geologist, naturwas born Oct. 6, 1859, in North Madison, Conn. Since 1894 he has been state geologist of Indiana. He is the author of Gleanings From Nature and The Geology and Natural Resources of Indiana, in nine volumes. Blatt, William Moses, lawyer, librarian, author, was born April 39, 1876, in Orange, N.J. He has been assistant editor of the New England Courier; and librarian of the Boston university law school. He is the author of Leading and Important Cases in Massachusetts Common Law. Blauvelt, Augustus, clergyman, author, was born April 7, 1832, in Covert, N.Y. He is a clergyman of the Dutch reformed church of New Jersey, deposed from the ministry on account of his liberal doctrinal views emalist,
