Boker, George Henry, diplomat, author, powas born Oct. 6, 1833, in Philadelphia, Pa. He was a poet and diplomat of Philadelphia; and United States minister to Turkey and Russia. He was the author of four tragedies entitled Calaynos; Anne Boleyn; Lenor de Guzman and Franoesca da Rimini. His volume of verse include The Lesson of Life; Poems of War; The Book of the Dead; Konigsmark; Street Lyrics; and Our Heroic Themes. He died Jan. 2, 1890, in Philadelphia, Pa. Boldt, Herman J., physician, surgeon, inventor, was born June 24, 1856, in Berlin, Germany. He came to the United States in childhood was educated in the grammar and high schools and under private tutors; and in 1879 graduated from the medical school of the university of New York. He is a successful physician of New York City; and since 1891 has confined his practice to gynecology. He is the inventor of various gynecological instruments; and in 1900 received a medal from the Paris exposition for the invention of an operating table. He has been president of the New York obstetrical society; and president of the German medical society of New York. Bolduan, Charles Frederick, physician, author, was born May 7, 1873, in Germany. He was professor of bacteriology and hygiene in
unty, Texas. Bollan, William, lawyer, author, was born in England. He settled in Boston in 1740; and was subsequently colonial agent in London for Massachusetts. He was active in its behalf and wrote many political tracts for that end, among which The Mutual Interests of Great Britain and the American Colonies Considered. He died in 1776 in Massachusetts. Boiler, Alfred Pancoast, engineer, author, was born Feb. 23, 1840, in Philadelphia, Pa. He is a contractor; and makes a specialty of bridge construction. He is the author of Practical Treatise on the Construction of Iron Highway Bridges; and Report on Thames River Bridge. Bolen, David Winton, lawyer, jurist, statesman, was born Aug. 17, 1851, in Carroll county, Va. He has been an editor was a surveyor; and is an eminent lawyer of Virginia, He was three times elected to the state legislature; was four years judge of the county court of Carroll county; and for two years was judge of the fifteenth judicial circuit of Virginia. He was a member of the Virginia constitutional convention in 1901-02; and in 1904 was a presidential elector on the democratic ticket for Judge Parker. Boles, Thomas, soldier, lawyer, jurist, congressman, was bom July 16, 1837, in Clarksville, Ark. In 1863-64 he served as a captain in the union army, experiencing many trials from ill health and military arrests. In 186568 he was judge of the fourth judicial district of Arkansas. In 1867-73 he was a representative from Arkansas to the fortieth, fortyfirst and forty-second congresses. Bolinger, Henry Clay, soldier, was born In Pennsylvania. In 1861 he became captain of the seventh Pennsylvania reserve corps and in 1865 was brevetted brigadier-general of volunteers. Boll, Jacob, naturalist, author, was born May 29, 1828, in Switzerland. died in 1894. Belles, John Augustus, soldier, lawyer, jurist, was born April 16, 1809, in Eastford, Conn. In 1843 he was chosen secretary of state under Governor Marcus Morton. He was a, member of the harbor and back bay commission in 1852. In 1862-65 he served as judge advocate on the staff of General John A. Dix, his brother-in-law. He was brevetted brigadier-general of volunteers in 1865; and was appointed naval solicitor the same year. He died May 35, 1878, in Washington, D.C.
Joshua Augustus, journalist, auth36, 1856, in Waterford, Conn. He graduated from the Bulkeley school of New London, Conn. and attended Amherst college. He is now one of the leading business men of New Milf ord. Conn. and the editor and proprietor of the Gazette of that town. He began work in journalism in the office of the New York Mail; and subsequently served on the staffs of the Courier of Great Barrington, Mass., and the Paper World of Holyoke, Mass.
