He was the author of History of Education; Our Great Captains; The Year of Battles: a History of the Franco-German War of 1870; Epidemics and Contagious Diseases; The Silk Industry in America; Our Western Empire; and The Great Metropolis. He died Jan. 13, 1893, in Brooklyn, N. Y. Brocklesby, John, educator, author, was born Oct. 8, 1811, in England. In 1843-73 he was professor of mathematics and natural philosophy in Trinity college at Hartford;, and professor of natural philosophy and astronomy in 1873-82. He was- acting president of the college several years. He was the successful expedition against the Musking Indians. He made two important treaties with the Indians. He was for many years surveyor-general of Pennsylvania. He died Nov. 15, 1809, in Milford, Pa. In 1839-43 he was a representative from Connecticut to the twentysixth and twenty-seventh congresses. In 1849-67 he was district attorney for the county of Tolland. Broderick, David Colbreth, United States senator, was born Dec. 4, 1820, in Washington, D.C. He removed to California in 1849; and engaged in the business of smelting and assaying gold. He was a member of the convention which drafted the constitution of that state; served two years in the California state senate; and Avas president of that body in 1851. In 1857-61 he was United States senator. He died Sept. 16, 1859, near Lake Merced, Cal.

Brodhead, Garland Carr, soldier, educator, geologist, was born Oct. 30, 1827, in Charlottesville, Va. In 1857 he was assistant geologist for the state of Missouri. He served in the civil war. In 1887-97 he lectured on geologj' in the university of Missouri. He is a fellow of the American association for the
advancement of
science.
