Brooks, Thomas Benton, soldier, engineer, geologist, author, was born June 15, 1836, in Monroe, N.Y. During the civil war he was captain in the first New York volunteer engineers, afterwards becoming major and aide on the general staff of the army. At the time of his resignation he held the brevet rank of colonel. In 1869-79 he was assistant geologist in charge of the surveys of the LaWe Superior iron regions. In this connection he was associated with Raphael Pumpelly; and prepared The Geological Survey of Michigan; and Geology of Wisconsin. He died in 1900 in Newburg, N.Y.
