Brown, Henry B., painter, artist, was born in 1831, in Portland, Maine. He painted coast scenery; and in his wonderful rendering of the sea he stands among American artists unrivalled.

East Highlands; On the Androscoggin; and On the Coast of Maine. He died in 1860 in Portland, Maine. Brown, Henry Billings, lawyer, jurist, was born March 3, 1836, in South Lee, Mass. In 1861 he was appointed deputy marshal of the United States; and he subsequently became assistant United States attorney for the eastern district of Michigan. In 1868 he was appointed judge of the state circuit court of

Wayne-county. During. 1875 he was appointed district judge for the eastern district of Michigan; and in 18911906 was associate justice of the supreme court of the United States, when he resigned on his seventieth birthday. He is the author of Admiralty Reports for Western Lake and River Districts. Brown, Henry Corbes, pioneer, contractor, financier, was born Nov. 18, 1830, in St. Clairsville, Ohio. In Denver he grew rich by building contracts and operations in lands and mines. In the spring of 1864 he took up a, homestead claim of one hundred and sixty acres; and the property is now worth millions. He was one of the builders of the Denver street railroad; and built and owned Brown's palace hotel. In 1875 he gave ten acres for a site for the capitol of Colorado. He died Nov. 1, 1902, in Denver, Col. Brown, Henry Kirke, sculptor, artist, was born Feb. 24, 1814, in Leyden, ilass. He attained distinction as one of the foremost •

sculptors in America. Plis principal work is Lincoln, in Prospect Park of Brooklyn, N.Y. He died July 10, 1886, in Newburg, X.Y. Meade, erected by the state of Pennsylvania on the battlefield of Gettysburg, has received high praise; has also executed an equestrian statue of General John P. Reynolds, erected at Gettysburgh, Pa.; and a statue of Commodore Hull on the naval arch in New York City.

Brown, Hiram Chellis, author, was born June 39, 1844, in Andover, N.H. He is the author of The Historical Bases of Religions, Primitive, Babylonian and Jewish. Brown, Howard Nicholson, clergyman, author, was born May 11, 1849, in Columbia, N. Y. In 1873 he became a minister of the unitarian church; in 1873-95 filled a pastorate in Brookline, Mass.; and since 1895 has been pastor of King's chapel at Boston, Mass. He is the author of Sunday Stories; Life of Jesus for Young People and Sermons in King's unteers.

He was one of the founders of the American colonization society, and worked for its advancement; and was one of the original members of the American bible society. He was the author of Life of Robert Pinley; The Unity of the Human Race; and also a Historical Vindication of the Abrogation of the Plan of Union by the Presbyterian Church in the United States of America. He died April 19, 1861, in Trenton, N.J. Brown, J. Appleton, painter, artist, was born July 13, 1844, in Newburyport, Mass. He became an associate of the national academy of design.
