Brown, John Henry, pioneer, soldier, lawyer, author, was born Oct. 39, 1820, in Pike county, Mo. He is the author of Two Years in Mexico; Early Life in the Southwest; Indian Wars and Pioneers of Texas; The Life aiid Times of Henry Smith; and a History of Texas. He died May 31, 1895, in Dallas, Tex. Brown, John Henry Hobart, clergyman, bishop, author, was born Jan. 1, 1831, in New York City. In 1875 he was consecrated first bishop of the diocese of Fond du Lac, Wis. He published a number of Sermons and Addresses. He died May 2, 1888, in Fond du Lac, Wis.
Brown, John Howard, journalist, author, was born Nov. 8, 1840, in Rhinebeck, N.Y. He was a student at Rhinebeck academy, Fort Edward institute and at Eastman college and studied law in New York City. He was a newspaper correspondent in 1863-65 in Washington, D.C; and in 1868-71 was a real estate agent and news correspondent in Georgia. In 3 871-85 he was a publisher of popular subscription books in New York City; in 1885-87 he was traveling correspondent for the New York Star; and in 1890-95 was
editor of the National Encyclopedia of American Biography of New York City. In 189699 he was editor of the Encyclopedia of American Biography published in Boston, Mass., the title of which is now Lamb's Biographical Dictionary of the United States. He is also the author of American Naval Heroes;
and other works. Brown, John Marshall, soldier, financier, legislator, was- born Dec. 14, 1838, in Portland, Maine. During the civil war he attained the rank of brigadier-general. In 1899 he was a member of the Maine state legislature. He died in 1907 in Portland, Maine. Brown, John Newton, clergyman, author, poet, was born June 39, 1803, in New London, Conn. In 1833 he moved to Boston, where he edited the Encyclopedia of Religious Knowledge, which was republished in England. He was the author of the Memorials of Baptist Martyrs; Poems and The
Ind. In 1861-63 he served in the sixteenth Indiana regiment. He originated the system of tree planting by railroads for future timber and tie supply. He is the author of Practical Arboroulture.
Brown, John Porter, oriental, scholar, was born Aug. 17, 1814, in Chillicothe, Ohio. He was the author of Dervishes, or Oriental Spiritualism; and also translated Ahmed Ben Hemden's Turkish Evening Entertainments; and Constantine's Ancient and Modern Constantinople. He died April 38, 1873, in Constantinople, Turkey. Brown, John R., soldier, manufacturer, congressman, was born Jan. 14, 1842, in Franklin county, Va. He entered the confederate- ar-my as a private in company twenty-fourth regiment Virginia volunteers. In 1870 he formed a copartnership with his father as manufacturers of tobacco. He was elected mayor of Martinsville in 1884. In 1887-89 he was a representative from Virginia to the fiftieth congress as a republican. "Brown, John W., lawyer jurist, congressman, was born in 1797 in Dundee, Scotland. He was elected a justice of the peace in 1820. In 1833-37 he was a representative from New York to the twenty-third and twenty-fourth congresses. In 1849-65 he was a justice of the supreme court of New York. He died Sept. 6, 1875, in Newburg, N.Y. Brown, John Walker, clergyman, poet, was born in 1814 in New York. He was the author of Christmas Bells and other poems. He died in 1849. Brown, John Wesley, journalist, lawyer, legislator, was born Nov. 15, 1852, in Lee Valley, Tenn. In 1884-87 he was state senator of Tennessee.

Brown, John Young, lawyer, congressman, governor, was born June 28, 1835, in Claysville, Ky. In 1859-61 and 1873-77 he was a representative from Kentucky to the thirtysixth, forty-third and forty-fourth congressHe was the twenty-ninth governor of es. Kentucky in 1891-95. He died in 1904 in Frankfort, Ky. Brown, Joseph, manufacturer, scientist, was born Dec. 3, 1733, in Providence, R.I. He was greatly interested in the science of electricity and his knowledge of that subject was remarkable for the time. At his death he left an electric machine of his own construction, then unsurpassed by any other in the country. He died Dec. 3, 1785, in Providence, R.I. Brown, Joseph, soldier, was born in 1773 in North Carolina. He fought in the war of 1812 as colonel in the twenty-seventh Tennessee regiment. When eighty-six years of age he wrote an account of his captivity and the destruction of Chickamauga. He died in 1862 in Tennessee. Brown, Joseph Bullock, soldier, surgeon, was born in New York.
