Brownell, William H., soldier. He attained the rank of brigadier-general during the civil war. He died Nov. 14, 1888, in Brooklyn. Browning, Eliza Gordon, librarian, author, was born Sept. 23, 1856, in Fortville, Ind. In 1880 she entered the public library of Indianapolis; in 1883 became the librarian's first assistant; and in 1892 became librarian. I;i 1893 she was elected president of the Indiana association of librarians. She is state historian of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She is part author of Lineage Book of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution in Indiana. Browning, John Hull, merchant, railroad president, was bom Dec. 25, 1841, in Orange, N.J. He was in the wholesale clothing business in New York City for about twenty years as member of W. C. Browning and company. Since 1887 he has been president of the Northern railroad of New Jersey.

Browning, Orville Hickman, soldier, lawyer, United States senator, was born in 1810 in Harrison county, Ky. He served through the Black Hawk war in 1832; in 1836 was elected to the Illinois state senate; in 186163 he was United States senator to fill a vacancy. In 1866 he was secretary of the interior; and in 1869 was a member of the state constitutional convention. He died Aug. 10, 1881, in Quincy, 111. Browning, Philip Embury, educator, chemist, author, was born Sept. 9, 1866, in Rhine-

Browning, William, physician, neurologist, author, was bom July 7, 1855, in New London county. Conn. Since 1901 he has been professor of diseases of the mind and nervous system at the Long Island college hospital. He is the author of The Veins of the Brain and its Envelopes; and The Epileptic Intervals.

Browning, William Charles, merchant, was born Nov. 13, 1833, in New York City. In 1868 with partners he established the firm of Browning, King and company, to represent the manufacturing and retail interests of their clothing trade, their wholesale business being carried on in Chicago under the of Henry W. King and company. They are the largest manufacturers of clothing in the world; and have retail branches in Chicago, St. Louis, Kansas City, St. Paul, Omaha, New York, Minneapolis, Brooklyn, Boston, Lincoln, Providence, Cleveland and various other cities. Brownlee, W-illiam Craig, clergyman, author, was born in 1784 in Scotland. In 1826 he was installed as one of the ministers of the Collegiate reformed Dutch church in New York City. He edited the Dutch Church Magazine through four consecutive volumes. He was appointed postmaster of Jonesboro in 1881. He was a delegate from the state at large to the republican national convention of 1884; and favored the

nomination of James G. Blaine. In 1897-1911 he was a representative from Tennessee to the fifty-fifth, fifty-sixth, fifty-seventh, fifty-eighth, fifty-ninth, sixtieth and sixty-first congresses as a republican.
