HERRINGSHAW'S LIBRARY OF AMERICAN BIOGRAPHY. Biunner, David B., educator, congressman, author, was born March 7, 1835, in Amity, Pa. In 1869-75 he was county superintendent of public schools; and in 1880 he opened the Keading business college. He has devoted much time to mineralogy and microscopy, and has large collections of specimens in those departments of science. In 1889-93 he was a representative from Pennsylvania to the fifty-first and fifty-second congresses as a democrat. He is the author of an elementary work on English Grammar and Analysis; and a work entitled The Indians of

Berks County, Pennsylvania. Brunner, John Hamilton, clergyman, college president, was born March 2, 1835, in Greeneville, Tenn. After receiving his educa> .

land and is prominent educational affairs. He has contributed valuable articles to current literature on various educational and religious topics. Brunot, Felix R., business man, philanthropist, was born Feb. 7, 1820, in Newport, Ky. He was educated in the Jeilerson college at Cannonsburg. Prior

1843 he was engaged as a civil engineer ; and then became to

interested in milling at Rock Island, 111. He was one of the founders of the Mercantile library of Pittsburg City, Pa.; and he was its president for many years. He was the originator of Library Hall. He helped care for the sick and wounded soldiers in the civil war; and was engaged in philanthropic work. He was one of the committee sent by President Grant to investigate the complaints of the Indians. Bruns, Henry Dickson, physician, oculist, author, was born in 1859 in Charleston, 8.C. In 1881 he graduated from the Jefferson medical college of Philadelphia with the Lea prize of one hundred dollars for thesis. He is surgeon-in-charge of the eye department of the eye, ear, nose and throat hospital of New Orleans, La.; and professor of diseases of the eye at the New Orleans polyclinic. He has been president of the Louisiana ballot reform league; and in 1898 was a member of the Louisiana constitutional convention. He

the author of several medical Monographs; and translated Mind Your Byes, a valuable French work. Bruns, John Dickson, surgeon, poet, was born Feb. 24, 1836, in Charleston, S.C. During the civil war he was surgeon of a general hospital of the confederacy. In 1866 he was chosen professor of physiology and pathology in the New Orleans school of medicine. is

died May 20, 1883, in New Orleans, La. Brush, Alexander, manufacturer, was bom Feb. 8, 1824, in New York. In 1848, with hia brother, he started in the brick business, in which they prospered; and became the most extensive brick manufacturers in the western part of New York. He died June 1, 1892, in New York. Brush, Charles Benjamin, surveyor, civil engineer, scientist, was born Feb. 5, 1848, in New York City. He has made examinations of underground strata for the determination of sources of water supply, the drainage of land, and the stability of foundations in many of the large cities of the United States. He also made explorations for the foundations of the Brooklyn bridge; and for awhile was engineer of the Hudson river tunnel. He

Brush, Charles Eliphalet, designer, architect, was born March 17, 1855, in Carbondale, 111. He was superintendent of the construction of the United States marine hospital at Cairo, 111.; the northern Illinois state normal school at De Kalb, 111.; and the Lee county courthouse at Dixon, 111. Brush, Charles Francis, electrical engineer, inventor, scientist, was born March 17, 1849, in Euclid, Ohio. In 1869 he graduated with the degree of M.E. from the university of Michigan; and subsequently he received the degree of M.S. from that institution of learning. He has also received the degrees of Ph.D. and LL.D.
