Burdick, Theodore Weld, soldier, congressman, was born Oct. 7, 1836, in Evansburg, Pa. He was treasurer and recorder in 185763 of Winneshiek county, Iowa. He recruited a company for the union army; was commissioned a captain; and served throughout the civil war. In 1877-79 he was a representative from Iowa to the forty-fifth congress as a republican. Buford, John Henry, lawyer, jurist, was born Feb. 29, 1852, in Parke county, Ind. For a number of years he was registrar of land oflBee at Oklahoma City; has been prosecuting attorney; in 1898-1902 was judge United States district court; and is now chief justice supreme court of Oklahoma at Guthrie. In 1854 he organized the engineer corps of the fifth regiment New York state national guards; and was elected captain. During the civil war he commanded his regiment in the short campaign of 1861 and received the brevet of brigadiergeneral in 1863. He died May 25, 1871, in New York City. Burges, Dempsey, soldier, congressman, was born in Camden county, N.O. He was lieutenant -colonel of Gregory's continental regiment in the revolutionary war. In 179598 he was a representative from North Carolina to the fourth and fifth congresses. He died in North Carolina. Burges, Gideon Albert, clergyman, college, president, author, was born May 39, 1854, in Providence, R.I. In 1890-96 he was the president of Parker college at Winnebago City, Minn; and in 1896 became a pastor at Toledo, Ohio. He is the author of The Free Baptist Cyclopaedia. Burges, Tristam, lawyer, jurist, congressman, was bom Feb. 36, 1770, in Rochester,

Mass. In 1817-18 he was chief justice of the supreme court of Rhode Island. He occupied the chair of oratory in Brown university. When the new diocese of Quincy, was formed he was chosen its first protestant episcopal bishop and was consecrated in 1878. He published a memoir of his brother, the first bishop of Maine and was also the author of various sermons, addresses, and Sunday-school

literature, with some carols and hymns. died Oct. 8, 1901, in St. Albans, Vt.

He was the agent of the American colonization society in Africa in 1817-18; assisted in founding the colony of Liberia; and in 181819 was the society's agent in the United States. He was the author of The Dedham Pulpit; and The Burgess Genealogy. He died i^ec. 5, 1870, in Dedham, Mass. Burgess, Ebenezer, missionary, author, was born June 35, 1805, in Grafton, Vt. In 183954 he was a missionary in India. He engaged in lecturing and literary work; and at his death had nearly completed an elaborate work on the antiquity of man.
