Burnett, Frank C, soldier, merchant, congressman, was bom March 19, 1842, in Wyoming, Pa. He served in the fifty-second regiment Pennsylvania volunteers during the civil war. He was in mercantile pursuits in 1864-69; and then engaged in banking. In 1871-73 he was a representative from Pennsylvania to the forty-second congress to fill a vacancy. Burnett, George Jackson, educator, college president, was bom Dec. 26, 1874, in Auburn, Ky. He taught in the country schools, the seminary of London and at Liberty college of Glasgow, Ky. Later he became vicepresident; and in 1903-07 was president of Liberty college of Glasgow, Ky. Since June, 1907, he has been president of the Tennessee college for women at Murfreesboro, Tenn.

Burnett, Henry Clay, lawyer, jurist, congressman, was born Oct. 5, 1825, in Essex county, Va. He removed to Kentucky; and in 1853 was clerk of the circuit court of Trigg county. In 1855-63 he was a representative from Kentucky to the thirty-fourth, thirty-fifth, thirty-sixth and thirty-seventh congresses. He was expelled for treasonable conduct in 1861; and took part in the civil war in the confederate service. He died Oct. 1,

Burnett, Henry Lawrence, soldier, lawyer, was born Dec. 26, 1838, in Youngstown, Ohio. In 1859 he graduated from the Ohio state normal law school. In 1861 he entered the

war; he became captain of the second Ohio cavalry; and was advanced to the rank civil

of a brigadier-general.

In 1863 he was judge advocate for the department of Ohio and the northern department. He was engaged in the prosecution of the assassins of President Lincoln. For several years he practiced law in Cincinnati, Ohio; and since 1872 in New York City. He has been United States attorney for the southern district of New

York

since 1898.

Burnett, Peter Hardeman, lawyer, jurist, governor, author, was born Nov. 16, 1807, in Nashville, Tenn. He was the first governor of California in 1849-51. In 1852-57 he was chief justice of the supreme court of California; and in 1857-58 was an associate justice. He was also a judge of the United States court for the territory of Oregon. He was the author of The Path Which Led a Protestant Lawyer to the Catholic Church; TheAmerican Theory of Government; Recollections and Opinions of an Old Pioneer; andl Reasons Why We Should Believe in God. He died May 17, 1895, in San Francisco. Cal.
