He discovered in the granite ruins ot an ancient civilization of Rhodesia a buried treasure of gold and gold ornaments dating beforj the Christian era; and discovered a lake of forty-nine square miles composed almost entirely of pure carbonate of soda. Burnham, Gordon Webster, manufacturer, philanthropist, was born March 20, 1803, in HamptoUj Conn. He became president of the Waterbuty clock company, the Waterbury watch company, the Waterbury brass company, and the American pin company. In 1876 he presented to New York City a heroic bronze statue of Webster by Thomas Ball, which was erected in Central park. His own monuemnt in Greenwood, buut some years prior to his death, is one of the finest in the cemetery. He died March 18, 1885, in New

This eminent congregational clergyman filled pastorates in Fall River, Boston, and Springfield, Mass.; and in 1894-95 was pastor of the Pilgrim church at St. Louis, Mo. He ia the author of History of Congregationalism in St. Louis; and Congregationalism. Burnham, Samuel, historian, author, was born in 1833 in Rindge, N.H. He wrote the history of East Boston; and several small volumes for the American tract society on natural history. He was one of the editors of the Congregationalist; and was literary editor of the Watchman and Reflector. He edited Charles Sumner's works; and at the time of his death had nearly completed a history of the Old South church of Boston. He died June 22, 1873, in Boston, Mass.
