Byles, Mather, clergyman, author, was bom March 15, 1707, in Boston, Mass. He was a congregational clergyman of Boston, famous both as preacher and wit. After forty-three years' ministry in the HoUis street church of Boston, his tory sympathies obliged him to give up his charge in 1776. He died July 5, 1788, in Boston, Mass. Byllynge, Edward, colonial proprietary, governor. In 1681 he was among the twentyfour proprietaries to whom the Duke of York confirmed the sale of the province; and in 1677 he was elected governor of the province of West Jersey. He served a number of years in the North Carolina state legislature; and in 1833-41 he was a representative from North Carolina to the twenty-third, twenty-fourth, twenty-fifth and twenty-sixth congresses. Byrd, William, historian, author; was bom 16, 1674, in Westover, Va. He was a colonial Virginian and man of letters, whose journals, first published in 1841, are known as The Westover Manuscripts, from Westover, the family mansion of Byrd. A fuller collection, styled the Byrd Manuscripts, was printed in 1866, edited by T. Wynne. They comprise The Story of the Dividing Line, an account of the expedition to fix the boundary between Virginia and North Carolina; A Progress to the Mines; and A Journey to the Land of Eden.
