He then read law; and since 1899 has been engaged in the practice of that profession. He is one of the prominent speakers in his state; and a possible candidate for congress in 1908. Cain, James William, educator, college president, was born Sept. 1, 1860, in New Haven, Conn. He began teaching in 1880; and in 1884-86 was principal in the academy of Lewiston, Pa. In 1886-1903 he was professor and in 1892-1903 vice-president of St. John's college of Annapolis, Md. Since 1903 he has been president of Washington college of Chestertown, Md. Cain, Richard H., clergyman, bishop, congressman, was born April 12, 1825, in Greenbrier county, Va. At an early age he was sent as a missionary to the freedmen in South Carolina. He was chosen a member of the constitutional convention of South Carolina; was elected a member of the state senate and served two years; and edited a newspaper from 1869. In 1873-75 and 187779 he was a representative from South Carolina to the forty-third and forty-fifth congresses as a republican. In 1880 he was chosen bishop by the general conference of the African methodist episcopal church. He died Jan. 18, 1887 in Washington, D.C.

Cahoone, J. Benjamin, naval officer, was born in 1800 in Rhode Island. He became pay-director; and finally retired with the relative rank of commodore in 1868 after serving for thirty-eight years with exemplary diligence and faithfulness. He died July 27, 1873 in New York City. Caille, Augustus, physician, author, was born April 1, 1854, in Madison, Ind. Since 1878 he has practiced medicine in New York City.
