In 1893-95 he was a representative from California to the fifty-third congress. Cannon, William, state legislator, governor, was born in 1809, in Bridgeville, Del. He was for some years in the state legislature of Delaware; and was state treasurer and member of the peace congress of 1861. He was the twenty-fourth governor of Delaware in 1863-65. He died March 1, 1865, in Philadelphia, Pa. Canon, John W., educator, was born Feb. 11, 1844, in Mercer county, Pa. He graduated from the state normal school of Edinboro. Pa; and taught there for several years. He has been principal of the high schools of Franklin, Pa. and is superintendent of publie schools in Sharon, Pa. Cant, William A., lawyer, state legislator, jurist, was born Dec. 23, 1863, in Westfield, Wis. In 1894 he was elected a member of the Minnesota state house of representatives; was city attorney of Duluth in 1895; and was a .iudge of the district court of Minnesota in l'89'6-1902.
Cantine, John, congressman. He was elected a representative from New York to the eighth congress, but resigned soon after taking his seat. He died in New York. In Cantrill, J. Campbell, congressman. 1907-11 he was a representative from Kentucky to the sixty-first congress. Canty, Thomas, lawyer, jurist, was born April 25, 1854, in London, England. In 188190 he practiced law in Minneapolis, Minn. He served three years as judge of the district court. In 1890-1900 he was an associate-justice of the supreme court of Minnesota.

Capen, Edward, librarian, was born Oct. 1831, in Dorchester, Mass. He was librarian of the Boston public library for twenty -two years; and in 1874 was elected to the olfice of librarian of the public library at Haverhill, Mass. Capen, Elmer Hewitt, clergyman, legislator, college president, was born April 5, 1838, in Stoughton, Mass. He was a member of the Massachusetts state legislature in 1859. He has filled pastorates in St. Paul, Minn.; in Providence, R.I.; and in 1875-1905 was president of Tufts college. He died March 33, 1905, in Medford, Mass. Capen, Francis L., astronomer, meteorologist, was born March 17, 1817, in Sterling, Mass. He made many astronomical discoveries and remarkable weather predictions, the latter gaining for him prominence on both sides of the Atlantic. Died July 31, 1889. Capen, John L., phrenologist, physician, was born June 13, 1833, in Dorchester, Mass. In 1875 he began the practice of medicine; and has made a specialty of phrenology. Capen, Nahum, journalist, publisher, anther, was born April 1, 1804, in Clinton, Mass. He was a Boston publisher. He was postmaster in 1857-61; and introduced the cus20,
tor of street letter-box collections. He was the author of The Eepublic of the United States; Reminiscences of Spurzheim and Combe ; and History of Democracy, or Political Progress Historically Illustrated. He died Jan. 8, 1886, in Dorchester, Mass. Capen, Oliver Bronson, journalist, author, was born on June 28, 1878, in Binghamton, N.Y. In 1900-07 he was engaged on the Binghamton Republican and ever since 1907
he has been with the Crowell publishing company. He is the author of Country Homes of Famous Americans. Capen, Samuel Billings, merchant, philanthropist, was born Dec. 13, 1843, in Boston, Mass. In 1858 he entered the employ of Wentworth and Bright, carpet dealers; and in 1864 was admitted to partnership. In 1889-93 he was president of the Boston municipal league.
