Chase, Salmon Portland, lawyer, jurist, governor. United States senator, was born Jan. 13, 1808, in Cornish, N.H. His iirst public position was that of school examiner in Cincinnati in 1839. In 1840 he was a city

councilman; in 1845 he

was projected what called a liberty convention; and was a member of the freeconvention held soil at Buffalo in 1848. In 1849-55 and 1861-63 he was United States senator from Ohio; he was the twenty-first governor of Ohio in 1856-CO. In 1861-64 he was secretary of the treasury; and in 18^4-73 he was chief justice of the supreme court of the United States. By virtue of his position as chief justice he presided over the senate while acting as a court of impeachment during the trial of President Andrew Johnson in 1868. He died May 7, 1873, in New York City. Chase, Samuel, lawyer, jurist, statesman, horji April 17, 1741, in Somerset county, Mav'.iiuid. He received a thorough academic education. In 1774-78 and 1784-85 he was a delegate from Maryland to the continental congress. He was a, signer of the declaration of independence. In 1788 he was appointed chief justice of the criminal court; WHS a member of the convention that ratified the federal constitution; and in 17961811 Avas an associate justice of the supreme court of United States. He died June 19, 1811, in Maryland.

Chase, Squire, missionary, was bom Feb. N.Y. In 1831 he was presiding elder of the St. Lawrence district. He twice went as a missionary to Liberia; but the climate impaired his health, and he was obliged to return. He was the author of Doctrine, History, and Moral Tendency of Eoman Catholic Indulgences. Chase, Thomas, educator, college president, author, was born June 16, 1837, in Worcester, Mass. He was president of Haverford college. He was co-editor with George Stuart of a series of classical text books; and was also the author of Hellas, her Monuments and Scenery, descriptive of his travels in Greece. Waldo K., manufacturer, business was born in 1847 in Stillwater, N.

Y. He acquired an interest in the manufacturing business and entered into partnership with two others. The firm developed rapidly and is now one of the leading concerns of the United States in the manufacture of malleable iron. He is also vice-president of the Troy and Bridgeport companies. Chase, William Henry, soldier, civil enginneer, was born April 35, 1844, in Philadelphia,' Pa. He became a first lieutenant in the engineer corps. While at St. Paul he was directed by General Warren to make a topographical survey of the battlefield of Gettysburg. The survey was completed in 1869; and is a valuable contribution to the military history of the war. He died June 21, 1871, in Philadelphia, Pa. Chase, William Ingrataam, journalist, publisher, author, was born March 20, 1852, in Stark county. 111.; and was a grandson of Bishop Philander Chase. In 1874 he settled in Chicago and learned printing. In 1881 he started the School Herald, a newspaper for use in schools, the first effort of its kind; and was also the author of Questions and Answers on Current History, issued annually in connection with his paper. He was the author or several books for school use, the principal of which are The Land We Live In, or Questions on United States History; Civil Government in Theory and Practice; Our Federal Government; and The Gladstone Speaker, a compilation. He died Jan. 3, 1889, in Chicago, 111. Chase, William Martin, lawyer, jurist, was born Dec. 28, 1837, in Canaan, N.H. In 18911908 he was an associate justice of the state supreme court of New Hampshire. Chase, William Merritt, painter, artist. was born Nov. 1, 1849, in Franklin, Ind. In 1890 he became a member of the national academy of design. His principal works are Fish Market; The Dowager; Broken Jug; Ready for a Ride; The Apprentice; portrait of General Webb; and portrait of Peter Cooper. Chassaignac, Charles Louis, physician, surgeon, was born Jan. 25, 1862, in New Orleans, La. He has been president of the Orleans parish medical society for three successive years; waspresident of the Louisiana state medical society; and is now professor of genito-urinary and rectal diseases in the New Orleans polyclinic, as well as president of the institution. He is president of the New Orleans sanitarium; and editor of the New Orleans Medical and Surgical Journal. Chastaln, Elijah W., congressman, was born South Carolina. In 1851-55 he was a representative from Georgia to the thirtysecond and thirty-third congresses. He died in Georgia. Chatard, Francis Silas Mareau, clergyman bishop, author, was born in 1834 in Baltimore, Md. In 1878 he was consecrated bishop of Vmcennes, Ind. He is the author of Christian Truths.
