After practicing his profession in New York and New Jersey in 1871-72 he removed to Selma, Ala.; was in the banking business there for two years; and then made coal mining a business. Because of contest, he only secured his seat in congress, to which he had been elected, at the close of the flfty-flrst congress in 1897.

state senator, was born Dec. 29, 1833, in Smithfleld, R.I. He has held various town offices, having been for some seventeen years a member of the town councils of Smithfleld and Lincoln. He was a representative in the Rhode Island state legislature in 1869-70 and 1892-95; and was state senator 1895-99. ney; declined a re-election, and also declined nomination for congress. He obtained a charter for the Union trust company of New York City, and was its secretary for several years. He was receiver of large institutions was an examiner of national banks; and in one case filed a personal bond of a million dollars. In the panic of 1873 he lost the greater part of his large fortune. He continued in active law practice until his death, Nov. 14, 1878, and was buried at Palmyra, N.Y. Two of his sons were members of the fifty-fourth congress at the same time, and represented adjoining districts of Alabama. In 1851 he removed to Wisconsin and engaged in merchandising and manufacturing. He was superintendent of schools for three years; was chairman of the board of supervisors one year; and was a, member of the Wisconsin house of representatives in 1859. In 1860 he removed to Chicago and engaged in the wholesale grocery business. In 1876 he was a member of the board of aldermen of Chicago, 111. In 1877-83 he was a representative from Illinois to the forty-fifth, forty-sixth and forty-seventh congresses. He died Dec. 3, 1885, in Fond du Lac, Wis.

and populists of the fourth district, against Gaston A. Robbins, democrat. The latter received the certificate of election from the governor on the face of the returns. Mr. Aldrich instituted a contest; and was seated by the house on Friday, March 13, 1895. He was re-elected to the fifty-fifth and fifty-sixth congresses, but was forced each time to contest for his seat. He made three successful contests. In 1896, 1900 and 1904 he was a delegate to the republican national convention; has represented Alabama on the republican congressional committees for six years and is a member of the Alabama state executive committee.
