In accordance with instructions from the Virginia convention, he first proposed in congress a declaration of independence, June 7, 1776, and a committee was appointed to prepare it. He was a signer of the adopted declaruaion of independence, and of the articles of confederation. After the adoption of the articles of federation he withdrew from congress and in 1784-86 he was president of the continental congress. In 1789-93 he was United States senator from Virginia. He died June 9, 1794. in Chantilly, Va.
Lee, Richard Henry, was born in 1794 in Westmoreland county, Va. He was a professor of Washington college, Pa.; and was a clergyman there until his death. He was the author of Memoirs of the Life of Rich and Henry Lee: life of Arthur Lee; a life of Harriet Preble. He died Jan. 3, Isa, in Washington, Pa.
Lee, Robert E. congressioun, was born in Schuylkill county, Pa.; was educated in the common schools of Pattsville, and is a business man. In 1911-15 he was a member of the sixty-second and sixty-third congresses.
Lee, Robert Edward, soldier, was born Jan. 19, 1806, in Stratford, Va. He was the celebrated confederate general of the civil war. An image should appear at this position in the text. He was the son of General Henry Lee, of the revolution, often called Light Horse Harry and married the daughter of the adopted son of General Washington. After an arduous struggle as major general of the confederate forces, which as a Virginian he felt bound to lead, he surrendered to Grant, April D. 1865, and thus closed the war. He was general in command in more than a score of battles. He died Oct. 13. 1870. in Lexington, Va.
Lee, Robert Edward, soldier, farmer, author, was born Oct, 27, 1843, in Arlington House, Va and is a son of General Robert Lee, served in the confederate army during the civil war; and attained the rank of captain. Since then he has been engaged in farming at West Point. Va. He is the author of Recollections and Letters of General Robert E. Lee.

Lee, Samuel Phillips, naval officer, author, was born Feb. 13. 1812, in Virginia. He entered the United States navy in 1825; was commissioned lieutenant in 1837; and rear admiral in 1870. He retired from active service in 1873. He was the author of the Cruise of the Dolphin in the Reports of the United States Naval Department. He died June 5, 1897, in Washington, D.C.
Lee, Silas, lawyer, jurist, legislator, congressman, was born in Massachusetts. He served in the Massachusetts legislature in 1793, 1797 and 1798; and 1799-1803 he was a representative from Massachusetts to the sixth and seventh congresses; and judge of probate in 1805-14. He was for some years chief judge of the court of common pleas; and was United States district attorney. He died in 1814 in Massachusetts.
Lee, Stephen Dill, soldier, planter, state senator, college president, was born Sept. 22. 1933, in Charleston, SC. In 1854 he graduated from the United States military academy at West Point; and received the degree of LL.D, from Tulane university. 1854-61 be was first lieutenant of the fourth artillery of the United States army; and for three years was regimental quartermaster in the same. During the civil war he served in the confederate service from captain to lieutenaut-general; and took part in all the important battles of the war. He then because a planter; was a member of the Mississippi state senate in 1870; and was a member of the constitutional convention of Mississippi in 1990. In 1880-99 he was president of the Mississippi agricultural and mechanical college; and is now commissioner to the Vicksburg national military park. He has been president of the Mississippi historical society; and lieutenant-general commanding the army of the Tennessee, department United States confederate vetrans.
Lee, Thomas, congressman, was born in New Jersey. In 1831-37 he was a representative from New Jersey to the twenty-third and twenty-fourth congresses. He died Nov. 2. 1855, in Port Elizabeth. N.J.
