Though the rail road was far more of an experiment than the canal, its stock had been taken up quickly. "The subscription books of the company," reads a note in the Register of April 7, 1827, "were closed on Saturday the 31st ult. on which day alone were taken thirteen thousand three hundred and eighty-seven shares, making, with those previously taken, forty-one thousand seven hundred and eighty-eight shares, inclusive of the five thousand allotted to and taken by the corporation of Baltimore.
