Gilmore pur chased a h alf interest in the paper and took charge of the office, Colonel T ate going to W ilkes-Barre, where he started the Lucerne Democrat. In 1847 M r. Gilmore bought Colonel T ate's interest in the Enquirer, and Colonel T ate about the same time purchased the Columbia Democrat from C a ^ . Henry Webb, and removed to Bloomsbuig. T he pub lication of the E nqu irer w as continued by Mr. G ilm ore until the spring o f 1849, when he moved the office to Bloomsburg and formed a partnership with Reuben W. W e aver, estab lishing the S ta r of the N orth, an account of which will be found among the Bloomsburg papers. T he Sentinel, a W hig paper, was started in 18 3 4 by John T . Davis, and continued until about 1838, when it w as bought by Wilbur & Jostin and the name changed to the Independ ent Ledger. It w as made an eight-page liter a ry paper, and conducted fo r about one year, when it was bought by several gentlemen, and the name again changed. T h e Conservator was issued by them with Jo h n T . D avis as editor. It continued through the "H ard Cider” campaign o f 1840, and is supposed to have l>een discontinued after the election. T h e S tar of the North was started by A . M. Gangewere in 1843. and published by him about one year. H e sold it to N. J . Jones and Jo h n H . W inter, who continued it until 1848, when they sohl it to Dewitt C . Kitchen, who changed the name to the Standard, and made it politically opposed to the Democrats. He issued it from 1848 to 1850, when it again changed hands and name. Col. John M. Snyder being the purchaser. T lie Telegraph w as the new title, and the policy returned to the Democracy. From vpril. 1850. until the spring o f 1851 it w as thus published, when Colonel Snyder sold it to Jam e s McClintock I-aird, who published it until the spring o f 1853, when it w as sold, but to whom docs not appear. T h e Investigator w as established in 1853 by Stew art Pcarcc and John M. Snyder, the form er retiring at the end o f a month. Colonel Snyder continuwl it until the spring o f 1855. when It w as purchased by Col. Levi L . Tate, and the name changed to the Bernnck Casetle.

Tate, who continued it until i860, when it was purcliased by Jerem iah S . San ders and is s u ^ by him here until 1869, when he moved the outfit to Hazleton. T his left Berwick without a local paper for the first time in fifty years. The Independent w as started by Charles B. Snyder on Ju n e i, 18 7 1, with a new outfit Frank L . Snyder was assistant editor, and Col. John M. Snyder the local editor. F o r about nine years the Snyders published an excellent rapcr, until Sept. I. 1879. when they sold it to Kobcrt S. Bowman, who changed the title to the B erw ick Independent. Mr. B ow man conducted it ably undl Ju ly, 1904, when he sold it to C. A. Rasely, who consolidated it with the B erw ick IV eekly Enterprise. T he B en v ic k Goceltc, the third o f that name, was started on March 25, 1882, by J . H. Dietcrick. On Ja n . i. 1884. he sold it to M . B. Margerum, who in September, 1885, associ ated H. R . Reedy with him as a partner. This paper ceased publication after a brief exist ence. The Berxvick IVeekly Enterprise was estab lished hy C . A. Rasely on Feb. 3, 1900. In Ju ly, 1904. he purchased the Independent and consolidated the two under the name of the Beru-ick Independent. H e continued this pub lication until Jan. 3 1, 1907. when it passed out o f existence. T he B erw ick D aily Enterprise, the first daily paper published in Berw ick, was launched by C. A . Rasely A pril 6, 1903. It w as a sprightly paper and filled a long-felt want. H e con ducted it until Jan. 3 1, 1907, when he sold the ncw.spipcr to C . T . Vanderslice and Paul R . E ycriy, owners and publishers of the Hloomsburg M orning Press. M r. R asely re tained the job printing department of the office, and still conducts it. He has a well equipped modern printing office. Vanderslice & E y c riy moved the Enterprise to another building, where they soon installed a new press, enlarged the paper, and arc giving Benvick and vicinity an up-to-date journal.

T he Centralia Jou rn al was started by Herskorits & Co. in Centralia in December, 1893. It was a small weekly paper and expired after a short life.
