hearing of his way of living, in compassion to his soul came to him, and with tears in his eyes, besought him to have more regard to his most precious soul, laying before him the promise of God’s grace and mercy, freely offered to repenting sinners, and spake so feelingly, that Faustus shed tears, and promised to him, that he would try to repent. This good man wars no sooner gone away, than Mephostophiles found him pensive and on his bed, now Mephostophiles mustering what had happened, began to reproach him with breach of covenant to his Lord Lucifer, and thereupon almost twisted his neck behind him, which made him cry out very lamentable; in the mean-time threatening to tear him to pieces, unless he renewed his obligation, which for fear, with much sorrow he did, in a manner the same as the former, which he confirmed by the latter.
