CHAP. III. BUDDHIST TEMPLES. 463 the central portion shown in the woodcut rests on a series of narrow steps, and an octagonal base with richly carved cornice and plinth, and the representation of the birth of the Bodhisattva on the die. This dagaba, all in white marble, was erected in 1780 to the memory of the Teshu Lama Erdeni, who died in Pekin. 1 It is more or less a copy of a Thibetan Chorten, and was probably designed by an architect from that province. 494.
