Edward the First of England, soon after the death of Alexander the Third, King of Scotland, taking advantage of the dissen- sions among the nobles, and the weakness of the reigning; monarch, John Baliol, invaded Scotland with a powerful army. After compelling John Baliol to do homage for the crown, and placing English garrisons in all the fortresses, he departed for England, leaving Scotland, as he thought in peace and quietness.
